After losing his teenage daughter in a devastating car crash, Alfano refused to let her memory fade into sorrow. Instead, he launched a mission to promote driver safety, determined to spare other families the pain his own endured. His story is one of resilience, fueled by love and a relentless drive to make roads safer for young drivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PAWBSJQXDVAGPBFCQGWFZLLK5U\">\u201cYou die twice. Once when you leave this earth and once when your name is uttered for the very last time,\u201d Alfano explained. \u201cSo, if we could keep Madison\u2019s name alive for way beyond my lifetime, then we at least know she\u2019ll live on in spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here is his story, originally published Sept. 22, 2025:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2YEQRR5A45AGJAGPWGOI6JMSII\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Rossville resident Lou Alfano is turning personal tragedy into a mission to save lives through an innovative take on driver education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J74IABC4LVALVJKPSEWIYXUVPE\">Alfano\u2019s daughter Madison, 18, was a 2023 graduate of Tottenville High School and a freshman at Monmouth University majoring in journalism and minoring in photography. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IC5OLIQCEREZ3MZAGVHKXA7E6U\">On Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, Madison was heading home from school when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2024\/01\/staten-island-family-mourns-loss-of-teen-18-killed-in-new-jersey-car-crash-lost-too-soon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was involved in a multi-vehicle collision on the Garden State Parkway<\/a> near Exit 127 \u2014 the exit drivers typically take to travel over the Outerbridge Crossing into Staten Island. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6YL3YNG6PNBIBL4LDFX3KHH56E\">Transferred to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, she underwent several surgeries but succumbed to her injuries early the next morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CKXQRJF7NJEURD7TJALTM5SEK4\">Within months of Madison\u2019s death, Alfano and his wife, Michelle, managed to establish <a href=\"https:\/\/mrafndn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Madison Rochelle Alfano Foundation<\/a>, a nonprofit organization that\u2019s now aiming to launch a free mobile driving simulator program to address gaps they feel are common in most driver education courses. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M2X4P7BVZJDNLKU6UNHH5EFDUU\">\u201cWe realized the majority of [Madison\u2019s] accident was probably due to inexperience, you know, a young driver,\u201d Alfano, 46, who serves as the foundation\u2019s fundraising coordinator, said. \u201cWhen looking back at driver\u2019s ed, we see there\u2019s holes there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Madison Alfano\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/WYLIW7VGCNH7PCG5MIRSQUUNXM.jpeg\"  \/>&#8220;Through all that tragedy and heartache that&#8217;s never ending, that&#8217;s never going to go away for us, we&#8217;re trying to make a positive difference in the community and hopefully beyond, in Madison&#8217;s memory,\u201d Lou Alfano said. (Courtesy of Lou Alfano)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FXML3SIOEVGH7MNQA4LYZEYMAY\">Alfano believes that a critical shortcoming in training new drivers is the inadequate emphasis on the ethical and practical responsibilities associated with operating a motor vehicle \u2014 an object that, when mishandled, possesses the potential to become a weapon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q2Y7CHHSHNDFVDJKY3LJ4YM5TI\">Teens often don\u2019t take the classes seriously, while others never even enroll and are handed their licenses and car keys upon their 18th birthday, he noted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"35FWMAYIQVDYPEPKYSFOMHMNEU\">The foundation\u2019s novel approach involves a 24-foot mobile trailer equipped with two driving simulators that will travel to high schools, colleges and community events throughout Staten Island. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GQVMMZF2HJENNOXFAM2B647HHE\">The program will offer free simulator training for drivers ages 17 to 20, focusing on situations and scenarios that can\u2019t be safely practiced during traditional driver education. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RP4KFQDISFBPXC64CWPGME726A\">\u201cOur goal is to make the road safer,\u201d Alfano explained. \u201cWe think this is going to become muscle memory when these kids learn what happens in a dangerous situation and how to avoid it or get out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RS5ELQRE75H7ZCE3XR76COXEPA\">Sessions would include classroom instruction followed by hands-on simulator experience with realistic controls \u2014 a steering wheel, gas and brake pedals \u2014 similar to those used in immersive driving-themed video games. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R2Z5QQOSWRCE7KSHIAALFK3XFA\">Once in the virtual driver\u2019s seat, participants will face varying simulations programmed to replicate experiences such as navigating wet roads and recovering from hydroplaning, reacting when another driver brakes suddenly and handling being cut off by angry drivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BF3FABFT3FDP7EPTNJJXQWTA7Y\">Alfano, who owns <a href=\"https:\/\/nynjdjs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SINYDJS<\/a>, an event company based in the borough, spent over a decade with the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, drawing inspiration from his law enforcement training in which simulators were commonly used. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HTALVNPOZJBTJCUV4UFFZTWJYE\">\u201cI was thinking about how I\u2019ve had years of experience with the MTA. We did a lot of active shooter drills on simulators because you can\u2019t take live fire,\u201d he explained. \u201cOur military and pilots do a lot of training with simulators. Delivery drivers train on them too. I wondered why young drivers aren\u2019t doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"F435P4J3U5BRBOJZHFOIT4FGO4\">The foundation is currently in its fundraising phase. Alfano estimated approximately $125,000 will be needed to purchase the trailer, equipment, power stations, and a pickup truck powerful enough to tow the mobile unit. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lou &amp; Michelle Alfano\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/4WPGY7KODNE43LB7HAYVKXLCIQ.JPG\"  \/>Lou and Michelle Alfano are committed to transforming how driver education is taught after the tragic death of their 18-year-old daughter in a car accident. They envision a system that incorporates high-tech simulators, allowing young drivers to experience various driving situations safely.(Advance\/SILive.com | Jan Somma-Hammel)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PBVRISSTNNASNK55UG4KWPG2NU\">During a ceremony held at the Corporate Commons Three campus Thursday morning in Bloomfield, <a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"\">The Lois &amp; Richard Nicotra Foundation<\/a> presented the Alfanos with a $1,500 grant. They are also pursuing additional funding opportunities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BQRIWLQK2JBVFFFXENCAULX6DE\">\u201cWe\u2019re hoping to have this launched in the spring,\u201d Lou Alfano said. \u201cIt\u2019s all funding at this point.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z5UQVJQKJRAHLIN2UAGOEP22YA\">Future plans include expanding to a permanent location while maintaining the mobile program. The foundation also hopes to develop a program to address another vulnerable driving demographic \u2014 drivers ages 65 and older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E4HTIOQTW5CM3LEYTNQXSQRK54\">\u201cWe want to protect not only the young drivers in our community but the community as a whole,\u201d Alfano said. \u201cWith safer people on the road, it\u2019s going to have a trickle-down effect where there\u2019ll be less accidents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MRCCBU4LCZH6RF7UJEOHZTBZUM\">In addition to the driving program, <a href=\"https:\/\/mrafndn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Madison Rochelle Alfano Foundation<\/a> provides a scholarship at Monmouth University benefiting Staten Island graduates and assists local community members in need. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MA3GEOELZFCK5BBFGOKTYI55EU\">This past March, the Alfanos donated 100% of the proceeds from a local pickleball tournament to help a family with whom they were not acquainted recover from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/03\/community-rallies-for-staten-island-family-after-devastating-house-fire.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a fire that decimated their Tompkinsville home<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TJOMWPTKABFBNAOKBPZ7RCSIOY\">\u201cThrough all that tragedy and heartache that\u2019s never ending, that\u2019s never going to go away for us, we\u2019re trying to make a positive difference in the community and hopefully beyond, in Madison\u2019s memory,\u201d Alfano said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AXUIXZG4ZNE65H3UAZFVNB2GNQ\">Winant Avenue, the Rossville street on which Madison grew up, will be renamed in her honor during a ceremony expected to be held next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L2TOSWUNY5DB3OKQYNI55MWNUM\">\u201cYou die twice.
