Outgoing Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh has been hired by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to serve as the new director of the state Canal Corp., the governor\u2019s office announced Monday.<\/p>\n
Walsh, an independent, has been mayor of the Salt City since 2018 and leaves office on Jan. 1. Hochul credited his tenure leading the city as credentials for leading the Canal Corp.<\/p>\n
“Ben Walsh delivered real results for Syracuse, from revitalizing neighborhoods to preparing workers for the jobs of the future,\u201d \u00a0Hochul said in a statement. \u201cHis experience driving collaboration and transformative growth will be an asset as we move into the historic canal system\u2019s third century and will benefit the Canal Corporation, canal\u202fcommunities,\u202fand New Yorkers and tourists alike.\u201d<\/p>\n
Walsh will replace Brian Stratton, who has served as director since 2011, and is retiring at the end of December.<\/p>\n
\u201cNew York State\u2019s canal system is a jewel, and I have seen firsthand the positive impact the people of the New York State Canal Corporation have made on the economy, recreation and environment in communities across Upstate New York,\u201d Walsh said in a statement. \u201cI am grateful to Governor Hochul and NYPA President and CEO Justin Driscoll for asking me to join the Canal Corporation team and build on the history, progress and potential of the canal system.\u201d<\/p>\n
