LOS ANGELES \u2014 Rob Reiner\u2019s drug-addicted son Nick hacked his beloved director dad and mom Michele to death after a massive blow-up at Conan O\u2019Brien\u2019s Christmas party Saturday \u2014 where the nepo baby \u201cfreaked out\u201d everyone and left Reiner terrified of what he would do next<\/a>, pals said.<\/p>\n

The trio reportedly ended up in a \u201cvery loud argument\u2019\u2019 \u2014 possibly because Nick was back on drugs and refusing yet another go at treatment<\/a> after at least 17 stints in rehab since age 15, sources told The Post on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cNick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous,\u2019\u2019 a source told People magazine. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Nick Reiner was reportedly acting erratically at O\u2019Brien\u2019s Christmas party on Saturday before the murders. BACKGRID<\/p>\n

The embarrassingly bitter blowout occurred fewer than 24 hours before ne\u2019re-do-well Nick allegedly fatally slit his parents\u2019 throats and stabbed them multiple times in the family\u2019s Los Angeles mansion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey had had an argument at Conan\u2019s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people that they\u2019re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating,\u2019\u2019 a lifelong family friend who lives near the Reiner home told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cNick was supposedly off drugs,\u201d but then talk surfaced that he was \u201cnot so much off them,\u2019\u2019 the neighbor said, explaining that at the accused killer son\u2019s lowest point over the years, he was \u201cbadly addicted to a combo of opiates and heroin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another friend of the family said, \u201cI know [the parents] wanted him to get help, go to rehab, but he wanted to get help while at home \u2014 he did not want to get treatment at a facility.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I know they have argued about that for years.\u2019\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

Rob, 78 \u2014 a beloved Hollywood legend famed for everything from his acting role as Michael \u201cMeathead\u201d Stivic in the TV classic \u201cAll in the Family\u2019\u2019 to directing big-screen cult classics such as \u201cStand by Me\u2019\u2019 and \u00a0\u201cThe Princess Bride\u2019\u2019 \u2014 quickly left the O\u2019Brien get-together with his photographer wife Michele, 68, after the fight, TMZ said.<\/p>\n

The showdown occurred a few months after another big public argument between the dad and Nick.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the latest on the death of Rob Reiner:<\/p>\n

Nick began screaming at his father in front of other diners at the posh Giorgio Baldi restaurant in Santa Monica Canyon, a worker there confirmed to The Post.<\/p>\n

Nick\u2019s sister Romy, a 28-year-old magazine writer and aspiring actress, reportedly found their parents\u2019 bodies around 3:40 p.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n

She told investigators at the time that her brother \u201cshould be a suspect\u2019\u2019 because he is \u201cdangerous,\u2019\u2019 sources \u00a0said \u2014 and Nick was nabbed hours later and charged with the murders.<\/a><\/p>\n

He was being held without bail, reportedly on\u00a0suicide watch<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rob and Michele also had another son, Jake, 34, who worked as a TV reporter in Houston and hosted a podcast on the LA Dodgers.<\/p>\n

The famous dad, previously married to former sitcom star Penny Marshall, also adopted his ex\u2019s daughter, Tracy Marshall Reiner.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came from the greatest family ever,\u201d Tracy, 61, told NBC News on Monday. \u201cI don\u2019t know what to say. I\u2019m in shock.\u201d<\/p>\n

An unsmiling Nick last publicly appeared with his parents and siblings Jake and Romy when they all walked the red carpet Sept. 9 at the \u201cSpinal Tap II: The End Continues\u201d premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

The wayward son had been battling drug addiction for more than half his life, ending up broke and homeless, sleeping on the street at times, he said in interviews.<\/p>\n

At one point, in 2015, he founded \u00a0an environmental non-profit called \u201cSave Malibu,\u201d \u00a0but it didn\u2019t last a year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese poor people did everything to help this kid,\u2019\u2019 said the family friend who told The Post that Nick was balking about going back to a treatment facility.<\/p>\n

Those futile efforts included Rob pulling out all the stops to help Nick produce the 2015 semi-autobiographical movie \u201cBeing Charlie\u2019\u2019 \u2014 including by using his own years of expertise to direct it and calling on Hollywood connections to pack the credits.<\/p>\n

But his \u201cspoiled\u201d son was ungrateful, a cast member said.<\/p>\n

The pair had at least one vicious argument in front of thecast and crew during filming, with them \u201cjust going off on each other,\u201d\u00a0stunt performer Erik Aud\u00e9 told Page Six.\u00a0\u201cYou could tell [Nick] was spoiled and Rob was just sick of his s\u2013t.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just assumed, whether this is correct or not, this kid must be pushing all his buttons,\u201d Aud\u00e9 said. \u201cRob can\u2019t do anything right.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Nick\u2019s] s a nepo-baby, a spoiled kid to the tee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Any goodwill sown between the awkward father-son duo during the project could not overcome Nick\u2019s long-standing simmering resentment toward his father, the son of equally famous late comic genius Carl Reiner.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think [Nick] really resented his dad \u2014 or maybe hated himself \u2014 for not being as talented, prolific or beloved as his dad or grandad,\u2019\u2019 a source told Page Six.<\/p>\n

Two months before Rob\u2019s death, the director was asked by interviewer Piers Morgan which of his films he wanted to be most remembered for.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have their favorites. They, you know, and the clich\u00e9, we love all our children, even the bad ones,\u201d Rob said.<\/p>\n

Nick\u2019s resentment of his father apparently boiled over<\/a> into something darker even before it took a deadly turn over the weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not the first time their son has been violent,\u2019\u2019 the family friend said the day after the parents\u2019 slayings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know of another incident a few years back with Nick, but I won\u2019t say more than that. I just never thought it would ever get to this point.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is such a nightmare.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Nick admitted in 2018 that he once trashed his parents\u2019 home during a meth-fueled rage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not much of a story. I got totally spun out on uppers \u2014 I think it was coke and something else \u2014 and I was up for days on end,\u201d Nick told the \u201cDopey\u2019\u2019 podcast. \u201cI started punching out some things in my guest house.\u201d<\/p>\n

A former classmate of Nick\u2019s told The Post on Monday that she \u201cinstantly knew\u2019\u2019 he was the suspect in his parents\u2019 murders when she heard the news.<\/p>\n

A security guard hired by the community to patrol the family\u2019s ritzy Brentwood hood because of looting after the Palisades Fire in January told The Post that Nick had been living with his parents for at least the past year.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could tell something was a little off with him,\u2019\u2019 the worker, Trevor Taufahema, said of the son.
\u201cHe\u2019s a strange individual, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

The guard said Nick specifically had one friend he would invite to his parents\u2019<\/a> multimillion-dollar home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would meet him right here,\u2019\u2019 Taufahema said near the residence.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure who he was, but I\u2019d always see [Nick] sneak off with him. I don\u2019t know what they were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Reiners\u2019 murder stunned and shattered the country\u2019s gilded \u00a0movie-making community.<\/p>\n

Kathy Bates, who starred in Reiner\u2019s 1990 film \u201cMisery\u201d which won her an Oscar, told The Post, \u201cI\u2019m horrified hearing this terrible news. Absolutely devastated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fellow director Ron Howard tweeted of Rob, \u201cHe proved to be a superlative filmmaker, a supportive colleague and at all times a dedicated citizen.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
