{"id":72873,"date":"2025-12-17T01:17:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T01:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/72873\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T01:17:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T01:17:08","slug":"dont-expect-nycs-growing-budget-hole-to-deter-mayor-elect-mamdanis-free-stuff-fantasy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/72873\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t expect NYC&#8217;s growing budget hole to deter Mayor-elect Mamdani&#8217;s \u2018free stuff\u2019 fantasy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On his way out of the door, city Comptroller <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/16\/us-news\/brad-lander-wasnt-allowed-to-use-iconic-mister-rogers-song-in-campaign-kickoff-video-sources\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brad Lander<\/a> warns of a $10 billion budget hole next year, growing to $13 billion the next \u2014 challenges that will surely dent <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/16\/us-news\/2b-budget-shortfall-leaves-mamdanis-freebie-filled-agenda-with-uphill-battle\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani\u2019s freebie-filled socialist agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lander, of course, blames Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/15\/us-news\/adams-tells-mamdani-to-keep-homelessness-under-control\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Adams<\/a>, when in fact the looming fiscal hole would\u2019ve been worse if Adams hadn\u2019t pushed back at the wild spending \u201cadds\u201d favored by the City Council and Lander.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, much of City Hall\u2019s extra spending these last three years was the result of housing more than 115,000 \u201casylum seekers\u201d who flooded into the Big Apple \u2014 a migration that Lander, Mamdani and other lefties welcome, even as they aim to resist all ICE efforts to apprehend even the most violent criminal \u201crefugees.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nor does Lander recommend spending cuts even now, despite likely coming cuts in federal aid.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he urges pure sleight-of-hand \u2014 a pack of gimmicks that don\u2019t really reduce the bottom line \u2014 and raising taxes on corporations and higher-income New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>Uh-oh: We thought those hikes were how Mamdani would fund his new spending, not how he\u2019d cover existing bills.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Mamdani will be lucky enough that Lander\u2019s replacement doesn\u2019t routinely settle as many outrageously high legal claims;
