Neighbors in the Boston-area community where MIT professor Nuno Louriero was\u00a0shot to death<\/a>\u00a0inside his apartment building earlier this week said they were stunned by the mysterious killing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Loureiro was gunned down at the entrance to his Brookline apartment on Monday night, the Norfolk District Attorney\u2019s Office said in a statement. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Less than 24 hours later, neighbors gathered outside of Loureiro\u2019s three-story apartment building to pay their respects to the professor and express their concern over such a violent act taking place in their\u00a0usually quaint neighborhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s scary to be in Brookline,\u201d Lloyd Rosenthal, a local resident, told Boston 25 News. \u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be safe, [but] no one\u2019s talking.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Brookline Police Department and Norfolk County District Attorney\u2019s Office are investigating Loureiro\u2019s death, the\u00a0Massachusetts State Police\u00a0said in a statement to Fox News Digital. However, no suspects have been named.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Neighbors of MIT professor Nuno Louriero, who was\u00a0shot to death, said they were stunned by the mysterious killing.\u00a0 AP<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard three loud bangs,\u201d an unnamed neighbor told Boston 25 News. \u201cI thought at first it was somebody in our apartment kicking in the door or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what happened or why it happened,\u201d neighbor Anne Greenwald told the outlet. \u201cIt\u2019s very scary, though. We\u2019re living in such terrible times right now that it seems like violence is just happening everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eurydice Hirsey, another Brookliner, told Fox News Digital she met Loureiro through his wife, Ines, and that the couple shares three children ranging in age from elementary school to college.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a family that\u2019s feeling such raw horror\u2026 terror,\u201d said Hirsey. \u201cAnd what do you do with something that\u2019s indescribable?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hirsey\u2019s husband added that the \u201conly answer to terrorism is a strong civil society.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd in the meantime, we face a lot of hate and suffering,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The renowned professor\u00a0joined MIT in 2016\u00a0and was appointed to the helm of the school\u2019s Plasma Science and Fusion Center last year, where he aimed to research and expand clean energy technology,\u00a0according to<\/a>\u00a0The Associated Press. The center stands as one of the school\u2019s largest laboratories and had over 250 employees when Loureiro was selected as its leader, the school\u2019s website stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Ted Docks, special agent in charge of FBI Boston, said investigators have found no connection between Loureiro\u2019s death and the shooting at Brown University<\/a> \u2013 located about 50 miles away \u2013 that left two students dead and nine injured over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Loureiro joined MIT in 2016\u00a0and was appointed to the helm of the school\u2019s Plasma Science and Fusion Center last year. MIT<\/p>\n

Loureiro was an accomplished researcher and leaves behind his wife and three children. He studied physics at the Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2000, and later earned a doctorate in physics at Imperial College London in 2005.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Loureiro completed postdoctoral work at the\u00a0Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory\u00a0from 2005 to 2007, and at the UKAEA Culham Centre for Fusion Energy from 2007 to 2009. Before joining MIT in 2016, Loureiro held a research position at the Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion at IST Lisbon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Brookline Police Department, Norfolk District Attorney\u2019s Office and Massachusetts State Police did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur deepest sympathies are with his family, students, colleagues, and all those who are grieving,\u201d MIT spokesperson Kimberly Allen wrote in a statement to Fox News. \u201cFocused outreach and conversations are taking place within our community to offer care and support for those who knew Prof. Loureiro, and a message will be shared with our wider community.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement\u00a0posted to social media<\/a>, U.S. Ambassador to Portugal John J. Arrigo added, \u201cI extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Nuno Loureiro, who led MIT\u2019s Plasma Science and Fusion Center.
