{"id":73847,"date":"2025-12-17T22:22:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T22:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/73847\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T22:22:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T22:22:16","slug":"staten-island-youths-sports-borough-wrestlers-shine-at-beat-the-streets-city-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/73847\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island youths sports: Borough wrestlers shine at Beat the Streets city championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4K6DZYW6EBHPJAQLCXQHMCZTTM\">BRONX, N.Y. &#8212; More than 200 youth wrestlers from the five boroughs braved the snow and slippery conditions and showed up at Truman High School for the Beat the Streets NYC Youth Championships on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CZXCUSWFOFD7LGL4E6BNSACIHA\">The tourney saw grapplers compete in three divisions &#8212; Boys Standard, Boys Novice and Girls. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SXJV6VJL4NGVDGA3QPVZFBFIAE\">Students from five Island middle schools captured a slew of medals with Markham Intermediate School taking second place overall in the Boys Standard team standings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2VTNPFWPGFDBDFA6ZNJODDW3PM\">Beat the Streets is a private organization that works with middle school and high school students to develop the sport of wrestling nationwide. They provide the practice wrestling mats, tournaments, competitions and development of the athletes and coaches. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZF7HD4XTQBHTLEYFJQE4ZREGPU\">The Markham school had and Island-high 22 wrestlers compete, while IS 75 and IS 24 sent out seven and five grapplers, respectively. Tottenville\/South Richmond Wrestling team had four wrestlers compete. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JNIQHX6BMJF3LK3DYJ3LVFTZ54\">Markham produced three city champions in the Standard division as Jonaire Thomas (120), Hunter Haig (130) and Edwin Jurado (200) mined gold.
