{"id":73859,"date":"2025-12-17T22:32:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T22:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/73859\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T22:32:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T22:32:08","slug":"urgent-priority-staten-island-officials-call-for-arthur-kill-rd-widening-amid-development-push","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/73859\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Urgent priority\u2019: Staten Island officials call for Arthur Kill Rd. widening amid development push"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GJ5JRO2NXVAJZGR5C7CHRSLGOQ\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Officials on Staten Island\u2019s South Shore want New York City to widen part of a major road in the area before traffic gets any worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MSZWRO6EH5CSNJI7NLN52GAVIE\">On Wednesday, Councilmember Frank Morano and Assemblymember Michael Reilly, Republicans representing the South Shore, hosted a press conference opposite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/business\/2025\/07\/massive-staten-island-warehouse-project-slated-to-open-in-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/business\/2025\/07\/massive-staten-island-warehouse-project-slated-to-open-in-2025.html\">warehouse under construction at Arthur Kill Road and Nassau Place in Richmond Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"REUXXF52LVEMNPNCLR3QQ23QDA\">At the press conference, both elected officials called on the city to begin designing and implementing a road widening project for the southern segment of Arthur Kill Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4NHZ2M3ROBHIPFD76JQ6WO45AQ\">\u201cI am calling, along with my colleagues, for the Arthur Kill road widening from Nassau [Place] through Huguenot [Avenue] to be treated as an urgent priority of the new mayoral administration,\u201d Morano said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I7HSAAMSK5CGFIOJOYLLWV6PDQ\">According to the elected officials, they will be sending a letter to several parts of the New York City government, including the current commissioners of the Department of Transportation and Department of Design and Construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I6CODLH3SVHTLNH2ZWTROX2TCY\">In the letter, the officials said they are urging that the city prioritize an expansion of the southern portion of Arthur Kill Road to avoid the timeline of the current Arthur Kill widening project, between Clarke Avenue and Richmond Avenue, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2021\/06\/arthur-kill-road-project-funded-in-2015-not-expected-to-be-completed-before-2028.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2021\/06\/arthur-kill-road-project-funded-in-2015-not-expected-to-be-completed-before-2028.html\">was fully funded in 2015 and long delayed.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UZ4KE4QXEZCOBIVGADUZTUNI3Q\">Additionally, the letter will be forwarded to the current mayoral administration and to the incoming mayor-elect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IC53TDLDINCJZFNZGQS7A7UNIU\">Along with those in attendance at the press conference, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and State Sen. Andrew Lanza will sign on to the letter, according to the officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PJOWYCYPYFABDOYT3IIXLJKG6E\">While the elected officials acknowledged that several factors delayed the start of the existing widening project \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/05\/city-urged-to-accelerate-timeline-for-13-year-arthur-kill-road-widening-project.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/05\/city-urged-to-accelerate-timeline-for-13-year-arthur-kill-road-widening-project.html\">including environmental concerns and the pandemic<\/a> \u2014 they said they do not want to see that timeline repeated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M6QKDDPD65G2DN2OFT2PGRPZTQ\">\u201cThis is not about blaming anyone for the past,\u201d Morano explained. \u201cIt\u2019s about acting responsibly.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7Y64GUI4LFGYDAM32R6K46RCSY\">The sense of urgency is due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/10\/4-major-industrial-projects-to-transform-arthur-kill-road-what-staten-islanders-need-to-know.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/10\/4-major-industrial-projects-to-transform-arthur-kill-road-what-staten-islanders-need-to-know.html\">series of projects planned for a nearly 2.7-mile section of Arthur Kill Road<\/a> that are set to increase traffic in the area.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"nws arthur kill widening\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/QQO3F6ZZ45BD5ICZNXFFMJTSXM.jpg\"  \/>A truck drives past an asphalt milling machine left on Arthur Kill Road near Nassau Place in Richmond Valley. South Shore elected officials are calling on the city to expedite a widening project for this stretch of Arthur Kill Road.(Advance\/SILive.com | Mike Matteo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VVN7JGUNLZHUXB4UHHNCWYIXBM\">Once these projects are up and running, the road, which already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/10\/massive-projects-planned-for-arthur-kill-rd-see-how-trucks-already-clog-this-narrow-strip-on-staten-island.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/10\/massive-projects-planned-for-arthur-kill-rd-see-how-trucks-already-clog-this-narrow-strip-on-staten-island.html\">sees heavy industrial traffic<\/a>, will have an additional 1.4 million square feet of warehouses and vehicle storage added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EJRBOHMN3VETXJU6VOSUQ3RS4M\">One of the projects in particular would bring a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/09\/staten-islanders-pack-meeting-about-trucking-terminal-coming-to-borough-pronounce-this-project-has-to-be-stopped.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/09\/staten-islanders-pack-meeting-about-trucking-terminal-coming-to-borough-pronounce-this-project-has-to-be-stopped.html\">16-acre trucking terminal with space for 184 tractor trailers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RVWAJJ65IJCKVBUYS6OAF6U3ZE\">Another project being built near where the press conference took place would add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/business\/2025\/07\/massive-staten-island-warehouse-project-slated-to-open-in-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/business\/2025\/07\/massive-staten-island-warehouse-project-slated-to-open-in-2025.html\">331,700 square feet of warehouse space and 60 loading docks<\/a> along the road. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AJTCCGHD7NFAHADKMJVFULJLKQ\">With these projects already approved, and with some being built, the elected officials said they are worried about the effect that trucks and other traffic will have on the surrounding area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5EHTV2JAFJAOXPYOW2DY4QGPSA\">\u201cI think the most important thing that we have to remember is public safety. The response time from FDNY, the NYPD and not to mention the collection of garbage,\u201d Reilly said. \u201cWithout the infrastructure in place, we are jeopardizing the local community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"I3D6WGNSN5CU3M5ZJNZW6GFGPM\">By prioritizing a widening on this southern section of Arthur Kill Road, the elected officials said they believe the surrounding area will be able to handle the increased congestion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C5LTP5YNVZBKZOGIJ5WGOXMKDU\">\u201cDon\u2019t build the traffic first and fix the road later,\u201d Morano said. \u201cDon\u2019t turn the South Shore into a truck corridor without the infrastructure necessary to support it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2DU2GWX2DREO7MHHOO2TBC2BQQ\">When asked about the request from the elected officials, a spokesperson from the DOT said the agency would review any letter sent on this topic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EEPCP6K5HJDTDBZEI5XJH4S65Y\">A representative for the Department of Design and Construction responded that the agency cannot initiate projects, like the widening of a road.<\/p>\n<p>Ongoing Arthur Kill widening<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EYQLJR665VEQDKW26B6FB2QMH4\">The ongoing Arthur Kill Road widening project that the elected officials referred to is a $15 million project would redesign a roughly 1.5-mile stretch of Arthur Kill Road, between Clarke Avenue and Richmond Avenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IY4F2OTAE5DKTLTFRWVUZNRJWU\">This project was first funded in 2015 by then-Mayor Bill de Blasio, but several factors pushed back the start of the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RH4SUWHRXJFMXH6WEAPHZPY6OE\">One reason for the lengthy timeline is the project\u2019s proximity to sensitive wetlands, which requires the completion of an Environmental Assessment statement, a process that usually takes two years to complete, the DDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/05\/city-urged-to-accelerate-timeline-for-13-year-arthur-kill-road-widening-project.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously told the Advance\/SILive.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZH5EFKFTKVFDJHZU4S33XB5RZY\">The project also requires cooperation and approval from several agencies at different levels of government, including the city Department of Environmental Protection and the Parks Department, as well as the state Department of Environmental Conservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S4BY44SGG5BFHKX76E4MANSRGU\">The DDC also must work with the DOT to review the roadway designs in an effort to minimize the amount of private land that the city must acquire to complete the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ARVWQ6O2NNAE3KWCHDGQRBMB3M\">In 2018, the DEP added additional storm sewer and water main work to the project, from Richmond Avenue to Cortelyou Avenue. This required a partial redesign and delayed the entire process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TEKRHBK5ONE7JIDSZQGD34FHBA\">Additionally, the consultant responsible for designing the project halted all work from March to December 2020 due to the pandemic, further delaying the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5HX47AUBSRGPTLUNI5WYOV2LZI\">This story is part of series investigating the rapid industrial development of Arthur Kill Road.
