Campus life\u2019s gone wild at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh \u2014 where an official club for members of the\u00a0\u201cfurry\u201d subculture<\/a>\u00a0was approved to meet a \u201cgrowing\u201d demand.<\/p>\n

The hair-raising new group, dubbed \u201cPlattsfur,\u201d was green-lit last month to accommodate a rise in 20-something furries \u2014 who dress up in full-body animal costumes and \u201cidentify\u201d as anthropomorphic characters, the\u00a0College Fix\u00a0<\/a>reported Tuesday.<\/p>\n

A student government at a\u00a0New York college\u00a0has approved a new \u201cfurry\u201d club on campus, joining a growing number of such student groups at colleges and universities across the country.<\/p>\n

Plattsburgh\u2019s Student Association approved the club, which was pitched as \u201ca safe space for furries to socialize and create content,\u201d in an 11-1 vote on Nov. 16.<\/p>\n

The group now has 17 members and recently hosted a campfire meetup, according to\u00a0campus newspaper<\/a>\u00a0Cardinal Points.<\/p>\n

\u201cOriginally, this started with a handful of us that were friends that kind of just found out that we\u2019re all furries,\u201d junior anthropology major Styx Williams told members of the student government.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The group recently had their first meeting.<\/p>\n

The group also held a campfire event.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe found out that there are quite a few furries on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nationwide, more than 75% of furries are under the age of 25 and nearly 60% say they are enrolled in college, according to the\u00a0International Anthropomorphic Research Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The community includes \u201cfans, artists, writers, gamers and role-players,\u201d who often create their own animal character, or \u201cfursona\u201d with whom they identify.<\/p>\n

Furry sub-genres include everything from Bronies \u2014 men who dress up like My Little Ponies \u2014 to foxes, dragons, wolves and more.<\/p>\n

Furry student groups have become more popular in the past several years, with new clubs appearing at universities nationwide, according to the research group.<\/p>\n

Several US colleges have also approved furry clubs in the past two years, including Minnesota State University, California Polytechnic State University and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, according to FOX News.<\/p>\n
