On\u00a0Tuesday,\u00a0New York\u2019s\u00a0elite\u00a0showed up in force\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Big\u00a0Apple premiere of Josh Safdie<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0propulsive,\u00a0Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a>-led\u00a0ping-pong\u00a0drama, \u201cMarty Supreme<\/a>.\u201d The film<\/a>\u00a0screened at\u00a0Regal\u00a0Times Square, followed by a star-studded\u00a0after-party at\u00a0The National Arts Club.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ahead of the\u00a0event, the Empire State Building was lit up in \u201cMarty Supreme<\/a>\u201d orange to\u00a0mark the premiere of what\u00a0A24\u2019s head of film, Noah Sacco,\u00a0described in his opening remarks as\u00a0\u201ca very New York movie.\u201d A\u00a0frigid\u00a042nd\u00a0Street filled up\u00a0with young fans hanging over\u00a0security\u00a0barriers to get a glimpse\u00a0of\u00a0their favorite celebrities,\u00a0erupting in screams when someone\u00a0with Gen Z or Alpha appeal, like Jack Harlow,\u00a0appeared\u00a0flanked by security.\u00a0And\u00a0Regal\u00a0staff set out\u00a0limited-edition \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d ping-pong ball popcorn buckets\u00a0in anticipation of the crowds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Several theaters were showing the film\u00a0simultaneously, but number 13, nestled at the back of the\u00a0top floor,\u00a0was filled with tastemakers\u00a0like\u00a0Anna Wintour\u00a0and Nina Garcia, cultural titans like\u00a0Annie Leibovitz\u00a0and Elvis Costello,\u00a0and\u00a0social media stars like \u201cSubway Takes\u201d host\u00a0Kareem Rahma\u00a0and Brittany Broski.\u00a0New York icon\u00a0Julia Fox\u00a0and\u00a0eternal \u201cit\u201d girl\u00a0Chlo\u00eb Sevigny\u00a0were also in attendance, along with a host of Gen Z musicians and creators.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And, of course, there were\u00a0plenty of\u00a0actors, including\u00a0Andr\u00e9 Holland,\u00a0Darren Criss,\u00a0Cooper\u00a0Hoffman,\u00a0and\u00a0Dylan O\u2019Brien,\u00a0as well as\u00a0\u201cIf I Had\u00a0Legs\u00a0I\u2019d Kick You\u201d director\u00a0Mary Bronstein,\u00a0filling the seats\u00a0to remind people that this was\u00a0actually a\u00a0film event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the start time for the screening dragged on\u00a0\u2014 likely in\u00a0no small part\u00a0because of\u00a0the eager mob\u00a0partially\u00a0blocking access to the\u00a0Regal\u00a0entrance\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the attendees\u00a0left\u00a0their seats to mingle or\u00a0go get\u00a0another\u00a0themed\u00a0popcorn ball from concessions.\u00a0Wintour and Leibowitz sat side by side making small talk, while\u00a0Busy Phillips,\u00a0Padma Lakshimi, and\u00a0others\u00a0worked\u00a0the room. When the\u00a0lights finally dimmed 45 minutes later,\u00a0Safdie took\u00a0the front of the theater\u00a0after\u00a0an affectionate introduction from Sacco, giving a\u00a0somewhat\u00a0bemused\u00a0apology about the delay before\u00a0diving into his remarks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis movie is about belief\u00a0\u2014\u00a0belief in others, belief in\u00a0self,\u00a0more than anything.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about dreams.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a heist film in some ways.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about how a dream can, you know, take a heist on faith,\u201d Safdie said, pausing to\u00a0direct the crew to kill the spotlight.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0about trying to control your fate,\u00a0and A24 really, really, really, from the very beginning, were one of the believers. \u2026 They were one of the squad cars that helped, you know, try to heist\u00a0the\u00a0\u2018bank of\u00a0faith.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

After reflecting on what it meant to show the film in New York, where part of\u00a0\u201cMarty Supreme\u201d\u00a0was shot and where his previous films had been made guerilla-style,\u00a0Safdie\u00a0rattled off a lengthy list\u00a0of crew,\u00a0praising each individually \u2014 often because of their ability to work with him.\u00a0The director then called to the front the film\u2019s co-writer,\u00a0Ronald Bronstein,\u00a0and its cast,\u00a0including\u00a0stars\u00a0Gwyneth Paltrow,\u00a0Odessa\u00a0A\u2019zion, and Kevin O\u2019Leary,\u00a0who lined up one by one\u00a0as Safdie gave his\u00a0colorful\u00a0introductions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd\u00a0last,\u00a0but not least, the young man who I met\u2026\u00a0who, in 2017, before I saw the film that\u00a0sent\u00a0him on a\u00a0skyrocket, he had these eyes that were bigger than his face. He was in the corner of a room, and he was there, but he\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0where he wanted to be yet.\u00a0And he had this supreme vision of himself; he was Timmy Supreme. And\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0so happy to be here, sharing this moment with him,\u201d Safdie said, as\u00a0Chalamet, wearing a bright-orange suit, joined his co-stars\u00a0and the tiring crowd erupted in applause.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Later that evening, when the cast, crew, and premiere attendees\u00a0who\u00a0hadn\u2019t\u00a0departed the screening early\u00a0decamped to a festively decorated National Arts Club,\u00a0both\u00a0Safdie\u00a0brothers\u00a0could be seen celebrating with their inner circle, while\u00a0icons like\u00a0Sissy Spacek\u00a0and\u00a0Sandra Bernhard\u00a0held court, and\u00a0newly elected NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani\u00a0wandered around, causing a thrill.\u00a0For the most part, the\u00a0massive spread of food was ignored in favor of the bar and the step-and-repeat\u00a0area,\u00a0which\u00a0seemed to always be\u00a0hosting\u00a0someone from \u201cShark Tank.\u201d\u00a0(Nearly the whole cast of the\u00a0reality series, along with their family\u00a0members, turned out to support\u00a0O\u2019Leary, who has a surprisingly\u00a0significant\u00a0role in the film.)\u00a0But the servers did their best to push pass hors d\u2019oeuvres and literal mounds of\u00a0charcuterie\u00a0all the same.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the after-party stretched into the early hours of Wednesday, the crowd sustained a jovial mood, taking in the\u00a0venue\u2019s\u00a0many\u00a0branded bits of decor \u2014 from a ping-pong table that served as a buffet\u00a0to arrangements of oranges stamped like balls and\u00a0promotional Wheaties boxes\u00a0bearing\u00a0Chalamet\u2019s face.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Younger members of the crowd, like Apple Martin, could be seen hanging around even after\u00a0it would have been acceptable to\u00a0depart, indicating, along with\u00a0a growing number of empty glasses,\u00a0that people were genuinely having\u00a0a good time.\u00a0And when it was time finally time to leave, A24 took advantage of one last promotional opportunity, sending guests into the\u00a0freezing\u00a0night with a black hat embroidered with \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d\u00a0in orange.\u00a0<\/p>\n
