Rob Reiner\u2019s rotten apple son Nick<\/a> was \u201cdeclining\u201d before he allegedly hacked his dad and mom Michele to death, according to a report \u2014 as the iconic filmmaker said earlier this year that Nick had been clean for the past six years.<\/p>\n

The suspected killer, who has been public about his past drug abuse, never gave an indication he was violent, even if he had a history of being \u201cself-destructive in many ways,\u201d a source close to the family told People.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIf they thought he was violent, things would have been very different,\u201d the source reportedly claimed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the worst of it, it hadn\u2019t been like this. I don\u2019t think anyone could have ever seen anything like this coming. Nick was declining lately but he had been really bad before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nick, 32, was hit with first-degree murder charges by Los Angeles prosecutors Tuesday after he allegedly stabbed \u201cThe Princess Bride\u201d director, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70,<\/a> to death early Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

The source also told People the couple \u201cfelt enormous guilt for so long that they couldn\u2019t help Nick get his life together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rob Reiner, who directed a series of acclaimed films in the 1980s and 1990s, hadn\u2019t been shy about his son\u2019s battle with drug addiction and the pair\u2019s complicated relationship.<\/p>\n

He told NPR in a September interview<\/a> that Nick was \u201cin a really good place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been great \u2026 hasn\u2019t been doing drugs for over six years,\u201d said Reiner, who has New York roots, growing up in Westchester County\u2019s New Rochelle.<\/p>\n

He also talked about his relationship with his middle child while acknowledging making mistakes as he tried to help him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was never, ever too busy,\u201d Reiner told NPR.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, if anything, I was the other way, you know, I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help. I\u2019m sure I made mistakes and, you know, I\u2019ve talked about that with him since.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two worked on a movie, \u201cBeing Charlie\u201d which is about an 18-year-old addict son of a movie star running for Congress. It was inspired by Nick\u2019s battle with drug abuse and co-written by Nick and a friend.<\/p>\n

Rob claimed at the time Nick was the \u201cheart and soul of the film.\u201d<\/p>\n

The murder suspect was arrested Sunday night. LAPD Gang and Narcotics<\/p>\n

A longtime neighbor previously claimed to The Post<\/a> that this was \u201cnot the first time their son has been violent without elaborating, while a security guard who patrolled the ritzy neighborhood said he \u201cnever saw any violence\u201d with Nick.<\/p>\n

In a 2018 interview, Nick admitted he once trashed his parents\u2019 guest home during a meth-fueled outburst.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything in the guest house got wrecked,\u201d he said. \u201cI literally punched the TV.\u201d<\/p>\n
