STATEN ISLAND, N.Y \u2014 While most Staten Islanders could rattle off the locations of several speed cameras, it seems like enough drivers are still getting caught unaware.<\/p>\n
Five speed cameras on Staten Island generated more than $5 million in fines over the course of the year, according to new data from New York City.<\/p>\n
These five cameras \u2014 part of a network of roughly 230 permanent and mobile speed cameras across the borough \u2014 issued a total of 100,618 tickets between the beginning of January and Nov. 24, the latest data available from the New York City Department of Finance.<\/p>\n
This represents nearly one-quarter of all speed camera tickets issued on Staten Island through 2025.<\/p>\n
With a $50 fine per speeding ticket, that totals just over $5 million in fines from these top five cameras alone.<\/p>\n
In total, 400,620 summonses were issued by automatic speed cameras between Jan. 1 and Nov. 24 on Staten Island, generating around $20 million in fines throughout 2025, according to the data.<\/p>\n
Using publicly available information from New York City\u2019s Open Data portal<\/a>, the Advance\/SILive.com looked at speed camera violations for 2025 published by the Department of Finance.<\/p>\n Here are the five most active speed cameras on Staten Island, according to city data collected between January and the end of November.<\/p>\n 5. Hylan Boulevard & Ainsworth Avenue<\/p>\n Direction: Southbound<\/p>\n Tickets issued: 12,534<\/p>\n Fines: $626,700<\/p>\n 4. Willow Road East & Home Place<\/p>\n Direction: Northbound<\/p>\n Tickets issued: 16,780<\/p>\n Fines: $839,000<\/p>\n 3. Clove Road & Niagara Street<\/p>\n Direction: Southbound<\/p>\n Tickets issued: 22,608<\/p>\n Fines: $1,130,400<\/p>\n 2. Goethals Road North & Jules Drive<\/p>\n Direction: Westbound<\/p>\n Tickets issued: 23,276<\/p>\n Fines: $1,163,800<\/p>\n 1. Willow Road West & Forest Avenue<\/p>\n Direction: Southbound<\/p>\n Tickets issued: 25,240<\/p>\n Fines: $1,271,000<\/p>\n Over the course of 2025, the Advance\/SILive.com visited some of these top speed camera locations to assess what makes them so lucrative.<\/p>\n At Hylan Boulevard and Ainsworth Avenue<\/a>, one driver was recorded going over 60 mph near the intersection with the speed camera. <\/p>\n Additionally over a 30-minute period, the average recorded speed of the cars was 32.2 MPH, and the speed most frequently recorded was 33 MPH. <\/p>\n While technically over the limit, those cars were still within the roughly 10 MPH leeway that drivers get before triggering the camera.<\/p>\n Near Goethals Road North and Jules Drive<\/a>, one resident described the camera as \u201cthe moneymaker\u201d when speaking to a reporter.<\/p>\n \u201cOh the moneymaker? That\u2019s the moneymaker,\u201d Kurt Timmermann of Graniteville said. <\/p>\n Though Timmermann acknowledged drivers\u2019 frustrations of not being able to slow down in time, he also argued the camera is for the greater good.<\/p>\n \u201cThis one is worth it. It\u2019s ridiculous, but to be honest with you it does work,\u201d Timmermann said.<\/p>\n Although the Clove Road and Niagara Street<\/a> camera was only installed in summer 2024, it has frequently ranked near the top for the most active speed cameras.<\/p>\n Even though the camera is going off frequently, one resident said that the speeding situation hasn\u2019t improved.<\/p>\n \u201cOh yeah I see the camera here going off a lot. I guess people don\u2019t know about it, but it goes off all the time,\u201d Joe F., who lives in Sunnyside, recently told the Advance\/SILive.com, asking his last name not be published.<\/p>\n \u201cI still think there is a bad speeding problem, but I don\u2019t think the camera helped,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n
