{"id":74312,"date":"2025-12-18T12:15:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T12:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/74312\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T12:15:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T12:15:07","slug":"mamdani-dozens-of-other-pols-press-nyc-hospitals-to-cut-labor-deal-with-nurses-as-deadline-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/74312\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani, dozens of other pols press NYC hospitals to cut labor deal with nurses as deadline looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and more than 100 other local politicians are putting pressure on some of New York City\u2019s largest private hospitals to settle a labor dispute with their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnursesunited.org\/state\/new-york\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unionized nurses<\/a> before their contracts expire at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>In an open letter shared exclusively with the Daily News on Wednesday, Mamdani and the 116 other elected leaders wrote that the nurses\u2019 demands for better wages and other perks aren\u2019t just reasonable but necessary at a time \u201cour health care system is under attack\u201d across the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal Medicaid and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban.org\/urban-wire\/medicaid-cuts-one-big-beautiful-bill-act-leave-3-10-young-adults-vulnerable-losing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other health care cuts<\/a> will mean more uninsured patients and less hospital funding. We are united with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysna.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NYSNA<\/a> nurses who are demanding that hospitals do everything possible to maintain the services and staff our communities need,\u201d the elected officials wrote in the letter, which the New York State Nurses Association plans to hand-deliver Friday at bargaining sessions with the 12 private hospitals\u2019 management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call on the hospital administration to agree to strong and enforceable safe staffing standards that ensure quality care in our communities. Providing safe working conditions where health care professionals can thrive and deliver quality care is essential to retaining enough nurses for safe staffing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Nurse (Shutterstock) \" width=\"3584\" data- src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/shutterstock_2544842567-e1766004632418.jpg\" data-attachment-id=\"8637831\" \/>Nurse (Shutterstock)<\/p>\n<p>Among the other elected officials who signed the letter were incoming City Comptroller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2024\/12\/12\/manhattan-boro-prez-mark-levine-jumps-nyc-comptroller-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Levine<\/a>, incoming City Council Speaker Julie Menin and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. The signatories also include the city\u2019s four Democratic borough presidents, 19 state senators, 45 state Assembly members and 40 City Council members.<\/p>\n<p>NYSNA represents 20,000 nurses whose labor contracts expire Dec. 31. Their employers include New York-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai, Montefiore, Maimonides and safety net hospitals in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.<\/p>\n<p>According to union officials, NYSNA presented hospital executives with proposals in September that included suggested salary increases, better benefits and labor protections against Artificial Intelligence in the workplace, among other provisions. The officials said many of the hospitals haven\u2019t responded to the proposals yet, including on wages.<\/p>\n<p>A New York-Presbyterian rep said its leaders \u201crespect and value the central role our nurses play,\u201d but didn\u2019t directly respond to the charge that some of the private hospitals haven\u2019t responded to NYSNA\u2019s proposals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to bargain in good faith and remain hopeful that NYSNA leadership shares our commitment to reaching a fair and reasonable contract agreement that recognizes the challenging realities of today\u2019s health care environment,\u201d the Presbytarian rep added.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the other hospitals didn\u2019t immediately return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani, a democratic socialist who\u2019s being sworn in as mayor Jan. 1, has positioned himself as an ally of organized labor for years.
