NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) \u2013 The state will continue to foot the bill for NYPD overtime on subways<\/a>, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday.<\/p>\n

Subway crime is at its lowest level in 16 years, despite an increase in ridership, Hochul said. Even still, the NYPD will maintain an increased presence in the subway system.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever in the history of the state has the state of New York invested money in NYPD overtime,\u201d Hochul said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to do it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

In January,\u00a0NYPD officers<\/a>\u00a0were put on every overnight train in the city.\u00a0This was initially meant to be a temporary fix. On Thursday, Hochul announced the state will contribute another $77 million to subway staffing.<\/p>\n

Hochul did not address whether the National Guard will remain in the subways. In September, Hochul said the National Guard would remain for \u201cmonths to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
