{"id":74998,"date":"2025-12-18T23:38:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T23:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/74998\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T23:38:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T23:38:09","slug":"widow-of-nypd-officer-killed-in-park-ave-mass-shooting-sues-skyscraper-owner-alleges-security-failures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/74998\/","title":{"rendered":"Widow of NYPD officer killed in Park Ave. mass shooting sues skyscraper owner, alleges security failures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Park Ave. building where a rampaging gunman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/08\/02\/how-shane-tamura-went-from-high-school-football-star-to-the-nyc-shooting-mass-murderer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed four people,<\/a> including an NYPD officer on a paid security detail, didn\u2019t have a single security measure to prevent the rifle-toting attacker from getting inside, a lawsuit filed by the slain officer\u2019s widow alleges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/07\/31\/funeral-nypd-police-officer-didarul-islam-nyc-park-ave-shooting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Officer Didarul Islam<\/a> was apparently the first line of defense inside 345 Park Ave. when the shooter, Shane Tamura, walked up to the 44-story skyscraper on July 28 with an assault rifle clearly visible in his hand, contends the lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a single security measure \u2014 physical barriers, weapon detection systems, cameras, or human surveillance \u2014 deterred, detected, disrupted or delayed the gunman\u2019s unimpeded path from the street, up steps and across the plaza to the lobby doors,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/iapps.courts.state.ny.us\/nyscef\/ViewDocument?docIndex=HQFSW55hbqvfQLiDoFmmSA==\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the lawsuit alleges.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even after shooting Islam \u2014 who was in his NYPD uniform working a paid security detail \u2014 and killing two more people in the lobby, security guard Aland Etienne and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/07\/31\/nyc-shooting-victim-wesley-lepatner-remembered-as-lifting-all-she-knew-your-mothers-an-angel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner<\/a>, Temura was able to get into an elevator that took him to the 33rd floor, where he killed a fourth victim, Julia Hyman.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A bullet hole is seen in the window of 345 Park Ave.\" width=\"3000\" data- src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/TNY-Shooting-Williams-6860copy.jpg\" data-attachment-id=\"8453677\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Barry Williams\/New York Daily News<\/p>\n<p>A bullet hole is seen in the window of 345 Park Ave. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 in Manhattan, after gunman Shane Tamura (inset) fired over 50 shots, killing an NYPD officer and three civilians. It\u2019s shocking to me, frankly,\u201d said Elizabeth Eilender, who\u2019s representing Islam\u2019s widow, Jamila Akhter. \u201cEspecially in mass shootings, seconds count. Every second.\u00a0 (Officer Islam) was shot in the back. There was no alarm, no notice, no nothing. He could have at least turned around and seen what there was to see. It was really shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The building, which is big enough to have its own ZIP code, could have used a number of measures but didn\u2019t, the lawsuit alleges \u2014 including an AI-powered camera system to detect firearms, a mass notification system, a gunshot detection system that sends out alerts, automatic control systems to lock down the building, panic buttons, physical barriers, active shooter drills and threat analysis strategies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took the elevator up like a food delivery guy and shot and killed Julia,\u201d Eiliender told the Daily News. \u201cI think it was an overall colossal security failure at this building, and there\u2019s plenty of blame to go around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Footage obtained by the Daily News shows Shane Tamura carrying an assault rifle before entering 345 Park Ave. in Manhattan on Monday, July 28, 2025. (Obtained by Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>Akhter is suing Rudin Management, which owns and operates the building, as well as security firm McLane Security and the NFL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe risk of football players who suffer from debilitating brain trauma targeting the NFL for revenge directly increased the risk for the building\u2019s occupants, one of which is the NFL headquarters, that a mass shooting was not a matter of \u2018if,\u2019 but \u2018when,&#8217;\u201d the lawsuit reads.<\/p>\n<p>The NFL headquarters is located on four floors inside the building and police believe Tamura, who also had a history of mental illness, was targeting the organization because he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/09\/26\/park-avenue-mass-shooter-shane-tamura-had-cte-nyc-medical-examiner-finds\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suffered from the degenerative brain disease known as CTE,<\/a> which has been linked to football head injuries. Tamura, a standout high school football player in California, never played professional football.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCTE. Study my brain please,\u201d Tamura wrote in a suicide note. \u201cThe league knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits.
