Gzim Palaj, commander of Staten Island\u2019s 121st Precinct, has been eager to address the theft issue head-on. The 121st Precinct covers the northwest part of the Island, including Mariners Harbor, Port Richmond, and the area of New Springville surrounding the Staten Island Mall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S3LSH5X7EBB3RC7DB6IU63ER7U\">The task force evolved from a previously successful holiday-only deployment in 2024 that helped form a more experienced and effective year-round unit. Gzim Palaj, of Staten Island\u2019s 121st precinct (left) pose in front of the Staten Island Mall&#8217;s Christmas tree in New Springville on Dec. 15, 2025.Advance\/SILive.com | Shaina McLawrence<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SYDDPLPGGZDGPGMUDBGJWSFD7E\">For the Staten Island Mall specifically, the daily police presence was increased from four officers, to six to eight officers on site at any given time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4U7K6ERHHZHSVPVRS2HDX6K4YE\">This expansion ensures that multiple officers are providing a constant and visible security presence in the Mall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SZI4EGHJT5FIVG7MGYMP7JTFBQ\">A cornerstone of the task force\u2019s success has been a hyper-focused effort on identifying and pursuing recidivist offenders. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KC6W2QIGDZBMZJWCFPRUJ4FNPA\">\u201cWhen you look at the year-to-date, we identified approximately 98 individuals who were arrested three or more times this year for retail theft boroughwide,\u201d Eger elaborated. \u201cSo throughout the year, working with the Richmond County District Attorney\u2019s Office, bail was set in about 64% of these cases. They\u2019ve obtained video for us where sometimes we may not have gotten the video in the store, but we have video of them leaving the store, walking through the Mall and exiting outside,\u201d Palaj said. \u201cThe collaboration we have with them is why we\u2019re so successful. Working with them, the asset protection officers in the stores \u2014 that\u2019s really credited with the drop in overall crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"73LGCWCHHJC5RDBRUKU6P2JL7A\">Staten Island Mall General Manager Jim Easley praised the police partnership as critical, stating the Mall would be in \u201cdeep trouble\u201d without it. When the police department responds, they know what to do. They\u2019re extremely well trained and they know who some of these people are already. It\u2019s nice having that relationship. Without it, I think we would be in deep trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZK3SOCBBMZEZXFYQLYKAEK3OSU\">The proof is in the numbers, according to law enforcement. These tactics have contributed to the reduction of theft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"75LCT6M2IJDIZFPDS6AW6QQDBM\">\u201cIf there\u2019s a crime in Sephora at the Mall, we\u2019ll speak to Zara, we\u2019ll speak to Pandora, we\u2019ll just speak to all of our partners, and they\u2019ll say, \u2018Yes, we had a similar crime today,\u2019 or \u2018We saw those individuals on surveillance camera,\u2019\u201d Eger explained. \u201cWe\u2019re able to charge these criminals with multiple crimes through the help of our retail community. That\u2019s a tremendous asset for our crime fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"A5QHJRYFYNDSDO77DTMDY6F3AI\">Easley indicated that shoplifting is the number one topic that shopkeepers talk about during the holidays. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N42DMLYB5BCL3FAL7PNI5R7F4M\">\u201cWhen one of the stores gets hit by an organized retail crime theft, they talk about it all the time,\u201d Easley said. \u201cSome of the retailers have gone as far as to hire their own loss prevention specialists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Crime walkthrough SI Mall holiday 2025\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766143210_688_7YWIE2BPUVDPZF5XNEGAKG3KFI.JPG\"  \/>\u201cThe police force has definitely stepped up in staffing the mall for us,&#8221; said a manager at JD Sports. &#8220;The response time\u2019s always been great if there ever was an issue\u2014 we\u2019ve had to call them maybe once or twice and they were always here right away.\u201dAdvance\/SILive.com | Shaina McLawrence<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TTFY5G6G6FHIFIYMUQV7HJ2J2Q\">A manager at JD Sports noted that \u201cmore cops is better\u201d and that their presence is a primary reason for the decrease in theft attempts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YFHKYIHH4VC4NPGIJKVLW262AY\">\u201cI don\u2019t think they can ever have too big a presence, honestly.
