As 2025 comes to a close, New York City public schools still have plenty of time off and other important dates to keep in mind through the rest of the academic year.<\/p>\n

For those counting down the days to summer already, the last day of classes is Friday, June 26, 2026.<\/p>\n

The city Department of Education academic calendar<\/a> includes some two dozen days off between the first day and the last day of classes.<\/p>\n

The calendar<\/a> gives time off for religious holidays like Good Friday, Yom Kippur and Eid al-Fitr, and week-long breaks for winter recess, mid-winter recess and spring recess, which include Christmas and Passover. Diwali has also been added as a public school holiday.<\/p>\n

The school calendar also allows time off for Italian Heritage Day\/Indigenous Peoples\u2019 Day (Columbus Day), Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day and Juneteenth.<\/p>\n

Dates for parent-teacher conference days for elementary, middle schools and high schools are also posted in the calendar.<\/p>\n

Winter recess is just days away,<\/a> as students prepare to have a total of 12 days off when it begins on Wednesday, Dec. 24. Students will return to class on Monday, Jan. 5.<\/p>\n

Here are key dates you need to know for the remainder of the academic year.<\/p>\n

JANUARY 2026<\/p>\n

Jan. 5 – Classes resume after winter recessJan. 19 – Schools closed for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DayJanuary dates to be determined – Regents exams are administeredJanuary dates to be determined – Professional Development Day; no classes for students attending high schools and 6-12 schools, all other students attend school<\/p>\n
