{"id":76951,"date":"2025-12-21T07:53:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T07:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/76951\/"},"modified":"2025-12-21T07:53:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T07:53:11","slug":"yankees-re-sign-paul-blackburn-to-one-year-2m-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/76951\/","title":{"rendered":"Yankees re-sign Paul Blackburn to one year, $2M deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Yankees are bringing back another swingman.<\/p>\n<p>In a move that offers low-cost depth and flexibility, but will hardly satisfy the fan base\u2019s quench for a big move, the Yankees agreed to re-sign Paul Blackburn on a one-year, $2 million contract on Saturday night, The Post\u2019s Jon Heyman confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>Blackburn\u2019s deal comes with a possible $500,000 in incentives, with the right-hander eligible to earn $100,000 each if he hits 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 innings. <\/p>\n<p>That is of note because Blackburn offers the ability to start \u2014 which the Yankees might need early in the season as they await the returns of Carlos Rod\u00f3n and Gerrit Cole \u2014 but also can provide innings out of the bullpen, as he did for the Yankees late last season after signing with them in August and eventually pitching well enough to make the roster for the AL wild-card series and ALDS.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50588235;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37985165\" width=\"888\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/10-04-25-new-york-112824265.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Blackburn #58 of the New York Yankees throws a pitch during the 8th inning.\" class=\"wp-image-37985165\"  \/>Paul Blackburn throws a pitch during a Yankees\u2019 Oct. 4 game. Jason Szenes for the NY Post<\/p>\n<p>In that regard, the 32-year-old Blackburn is similar to lefty Ryan Yarbrough, who <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/17\/sports\/yankees-re-sign-ryan-yarbrough-to-fill-crucial-pitching-role\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">re-signed for $2.5 million earlier this offseason<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It continues a trend of the Yankees running it back with players who finished last season with them, which includes Trent Grisham <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/18\/sports\/trent-grisham-accepts-22-million-qualifying-offer-in-first-big-domino-of-yankees-offseason\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accepting the $22.025 million qualifying offer<\/a>, picking up <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/05\/sports\/yankees-dump-jonathan-loaisiga-keep-tim-hill-in-big-bullpen-calls\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Hill\u2019s $3 million club option<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/13\/sports\/yankees-re-signing-amed-rosario-on-2-5-million-contract\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">re-signing Amed Rosario for $2.5 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the moves make sense in their own right, though the collection of them has left fans underwhelmed as they await bigger moves, like re-signing Cody Bellinger or landing Japanese right-hander Tatsuya Imai.<\/p>\n<p>As the Yankees currently stand, they are projected to begin 2026 with a rotation of Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, Will Warren and Yarbrough, though they likely will build up Blackburn as a starter in camp to give them another option.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGo beyond the box score with the Bombers\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Yankees by Greg Joyce, exclusively on Sports+.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees originally picked up Blackburn last August after the Mets designated him for assignment.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran got beat up in his first outing, which was 3 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings of mop-up duty, but in his next seven appearances to end the season \u2014 five of them lasting two innings apiece \u2014 Blackburn posted a 1.50 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 12 innings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Yankees are bringing back another swingman.
