STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 A driver was killed late Sunday night after colliding with a box truck on the Staten Island Expressway, in what remains an ongoing investigation, according to an NYPD spokesperson. <\/p>\n
Emergency crews responded just before 11 p.m. to reports of a crash on the New Jersey-bound side of the highway, near the Victory Boulevard exit and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway interchange. <\/p>\n
A preliminary investigation determined the 24-year-old driver was operating a BMW when he crashed into the rear of the truck, the police spokesperson said. <\/p>\n
The driver, who had not yet been identified Monday morning, was initially transported by ambulance to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton in critical condition, an FDNY spokesperson said Monday. <\/p>\n
A 43-year-old man driving the box truck remained at the scene and no charges had been filed as of Monday, police said. <\/p>\n
Video of the aftermath, shot from several feet away on the 500 block of Willow Road East, showed both vehicles immobile and fully engulfed in smoke. City firefighters also were called to the scene. <\/p>\n
Traffic meanwhile was re-routed as police shut down the New Jersey-bound side of the highway, from the Victory Boulevard exit to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway interchange, according to an emergency notification by city officials. <\/p>\n
The NYPD\u2019s Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad is conducting an ongoing investigation, police said. <\/p>\n
