Kathy Hochul vetoed a piece of legislation Friday that would\u2019ve restored some public access to police radio frequencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R6QCWXVPK5ECLORDTOOXINHQKU\">Police agencies around the nation, including the NYPD, have moved to encrypt their radio frequencies in recent years blocking public access, including that of the media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UFZZUPIF3VDRJGQS6ALLWXKBTE\">The bill Hochul vetoed would\u2019ve required New York law enforcement agencies to make their frequencies available, at the agencies\u2019 discretions, to emergency services organizations and professional journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4SAJ6WHTR5G4XN2UA7ZABOOTWI\">Hochul\u2019s veto memo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/politics\/cny\/2025\/12\/hochul-vetoes-transparency-bill-aimed-at-ny-police-radio-transmissions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/politics\/cny\/2025\/12\/hochul-vetoes-transparency-bill-aimed-at-ny-police-radio-transmissions.html\">reported by Syracuse.com<\/a>, cited public safety concerns in explaining why the governor struck down the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7CCOMWCUAFBPVD4VXAW6JWNYEA\">\u201cIn a time when public officials face growing threats of extreme violence, the bill also requires a police agency to effectively make real-time disclosure of the official\u2019s movements to bloggers and paparazzi in addition to more traditional journalists,\u201d Hochul wrote in the memo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C7WBUCDG5ZGANIKGQEN2V3DW44\">Media across New York City, including the Advance\/SILive.com, admonished the NYPD and Mayor Eric Adams after it opted to encrypt its radio frequencies citing similar safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HZVNGXQ6ERD5NGSUK2IGWADK3M\">Traditionally, media outlets relied on those radio frequencies to report on crime and emergency responses helping to better inform the public of what was happening in their neighborhoods. The FDNY radio frequencies remain unencrypted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OQIFR4Q4OZBBJFWWP2M7OJEPOE\">Despite the opposition, Hochul\u2019s veto largely puts to rest the state legislature\u2019s efforts to roll back law enforcement encryption efforts as the legislation did not pass with veto-proof majorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DSXZX2NHMBG37JV4Y7VG7KHZLI\">Staten Island\u2019s state elected officials voted for the legislation on party lines with Democrats \u2014 State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, who represents the North Shore, and North Shore Assemblymember Charles Fall \u2014 backing the bill and Republicans \u2014 State Sen. Andrew Lanza, who represents the South Shore, the Mid-Island\u2019s Assemblymemner Sam Pirozzolo, the South Shore\u2019s Assemblymember Michael Reilly, and the East Shore\u2019s Assemblymember Michael Tannousis \u2014 voting against it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O4R4EGVWAFHUBLEE7L6SVTD7VU\">A similar bill passed the City Council Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Gov.
