Millions of people took to the streets Saturday in \u201cNo Kings\u201d marches opposing President Donald Trump, with demonstrations unfolding in more than 2,500 cities across all 50 states and several European capitals.<\/p>\n
Protests began earlier in the day in London, Madrid, Berlin, Stockholm and Rome, where crowds gathered outside U.S. embassies holding signs reading \u201cMake America sane again\u201d and \u201cStop making war on your own people.\u201d<\/p>\n
By midday, major rallies were underway in New York City, Washington, D.C., Chicago and San Diego \u2014 with more expected across the West Coast later in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
In Washington, Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut warned that American democracy is already \u201cin the middle of an authoritarian takeover,\u201d telling protesters that \u201cno one is riding to our rescue.\u201d<\/p>\n
On social media, Trump\u2019s \u201cWar Room\u201d account posted memes mocking the protests, including one<\/a> showing Trump wearing a gold crown.<\/p>\n Organizers of \u201cNo Kings\u201d \u2014 not the name of a specific group, but rather a coalition of partners putting together this weekend\u2019s protests \u2014 say that Trump is acting more like a king than the leader of a democracy. The demonstrations come amid escalating conflict between federal law enforcement and protesters.<\/p>\n \u201cHis administration is sending masked agents into our streets, terrorizing our communities. They are targeting immigrant families, profiling, arresting and detaining people without warrants,\u201d the \u201cNo Kings\u201d website<\/a> states of Trump\u2019s nationwide<\/a> immigration<\/a> crackdown<\/a>. \u201cThe president thinks his rule is absolute.
