In Houston, Raines\u2019 trajectory illustrates another success story for the Club\u2019s player pathway system. The midfielder originally\u00a0signed a Homegrown Player contract<\/a>\u00a0with the Dynamo in February 2022 as a 16-year-old, first spending\u00a0most of\u00a0his playing time with Houston Dynamo 2 in MLS NEXT Pro, where he helped the team earn three consecutive MLSNP playoffs appearances between 2022-24. Throughout that time, Raines continued to earn first team minutes and,\u00a0last\u00a0season,\u00a0established\u00a0himself as a key contributor\u00a0in\u00a0the first team\u2019s midfield.\u00a0<\/p>\n Raines\u00a0made 61 appearances in all competitions with the Dynamo, totaling one goal and two assists.\u00a0He made his MLS debut at just 17 years, five\u00a0months\u00a0and 24 days (Sept. 4, 2022, at SEA) and became the youngest player in Dynamo history to start an\u00a0MLS match (Mar. 25, 2023, vs. NYCFC) at 18 years and\u00a014 days. Additionally, the American became the youngest player in Dynamo history to complete a full match (Oct. 10, 2024, at STL) at 19 years and\u00a0208 days.\u00a0<\/p>\n With the Dynamo, Raines scored his debut first team goal in\u00a0match-winning style<\/a>\u00a0versus the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the 2023 U.S. Open Cup to help the Dynamo advance to the Round of 32 and eventually\u00a0win the entire tournament<\/a>. The title marked Houston\u2019s second Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title and fourth domestic championship. The midfielder has also recorded two assists for the Dynamo, both coming this year \u2013 his first in a\u00a04-1 U.S. Open Cup victory<\/a>\u00a0versus USL Championship side Phoenix Rising FC and\u00a0his second versus Liga MX side Tigres UANL<\/a>\u00a0in a Leagues Cup match.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n In\u00a0October, the young American was\u00a0named to Major League Soccer\u2019s 2025 22 Under 22 class<\/a>\u00a0that highlights the best young international and domestic players across the league. In\u00a0December, Raines was\u00a0nominated for\u00a0U.S. Soccer\u2019s 2025 Young Male Player of the Year Award.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n The highly touted U.S. Men\u2019s National Team prospect played a key role in helping the U-20 squad win their group at the U-20 World Cup and make a run to the quarterfinals\u00a0after featuring in every match.\u00a0Raines also featured in every match\u00a0of the 2024 Concacaf U-20 Championship\u00a0where the U.S. reached the final versus Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n The transaction marks Houston\u2019s third involvement in the league\u2019s new cash-for-player trade mechanism\u00a0and the second\u00a0time\u00a0that Houston has\u00a0traded\u00a0a player using\u00a0this system.\u00a0In February, the Dynamo\u00a0acquired\u00a0midfielder\u00a0Jack McGlynn\u00a0in an\u00a0historic cash trade<\/a>, sending $2.1 million in exchange for the 21-year-old U.S. Men\u2019s National Team player to mark the first cash for player trade for a Homegrown player in MLS history and one of the largest trades in league history.
