A Brooklyn phyical therapist killed while riding a scooter to work<\/a> didn\u2019t want to get a second car for his commute, even with two young children at home, his heartbroken wife said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Ilya Perloff, 41, collided with a minivan while riding his electric standup scooter in Marine Park, his wife Melissa Perloff learned through a phone call as she drove their daughters to a Chanukah party on Long Island Sunday.<\/p>\n

She learned a short time later that he had died.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe only have one car,\u201d the victim\u2019s tearful wife, a public school teacher, said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t want a second car. He loved that scooter. He went to work on it. The only thing he didn\u2019t use it for was to transport the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had it for a while,\u201d she added. \u201cHe loved it. I was like, \u2018We need a second car. We have two kids now.\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018We don\u2019t need it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Ilya, a physical therapist at a nursing home and rehabilitation facility, was riding west on Fillmore Ave. when he collided with a \u00a02015 Toyota Sienna minivan traveling north on E. 38th St. at about 11:50 a.m., cops said. He was on his way to work.<\/p>\n

The impact sent the victim flying into a parked minivan, police said. Medics rushed Ilya to Mount Sinai Brooklyn,<\/a> where he died.<\/p>\n

Police said the driver, a 70-year-old woman, remained at the scene and was not hurt. She faced no immediate charges.<\/p>\n

Perloff\u2019s wife was on speakerphone when she got the initial call from cops that her husband was in a serious crash and had to pull over to calm her 10- and 2-year old daughters.<\/p>\n

She managed to get them to her parents\u2019 Long Island house before her father brought her back to Brooklyn, where she received the news her husband had not survived.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just trying to hold it together for my daughters,\u201d she said as loved ones gathered in Ilya\u2019s mother\u2019s home, near where Ilya lived with his family, to comfort them. \u201cIt\u2019s been nice having people around, but I\u2019m worried for when they leave. It doesn\u2019t really feel real. It feels like he\u2019s going to walk in the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Illya\u2019s wife described the victim as free-spirited and a handyman who could fix just about anything.<\/p>\n

\u201dI called him my own personal Mr. Fix it,\u201d Melissa said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get a lot of anxiety,\u201d she added.\u201d He was the calm to that. He made me feel like everything is gonna be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ilya was very hands-on with the girls.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t the type that wouldn\u2019t change a diaper,\u201d Melissa said. \u201cHe did anything for the girls.\u201d<\/p>\n

She is devastated they will now be raised fatherless.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to do what I can to be both, but I\u2019ll never be able to fill his shoes,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re going to suffer without him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe little one, he\u2019s her favorite,\u201d she added. \u201cShe\u2019s in the daddy phase. She hasn\u2019t said anything yet but I\u2019m dreading when she\u2019ll be like, \u2018Where is he?\u2019 I\u2019m just trying to avoid it. I\u2019m scared for when she says it, because I don\u2019t think I can listen to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Friends of the family have launched a GoFundMe to support them that has quickly raised over $65,000.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ilya, who was born in Moscow, loved jet skiiing.<\/p>\n

His older daughter spent all day Monday looking at the water from the family\u2019s Mill Basin home and thinking about her father.<\/p>\n
