Thick tree roots are tearing into a Bed-Stuy home, a growing concern homeowner Erin Uzun says could eventually cause part of the building to collapse.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat room is going to collapse,\u201d Uzun said. \u201cIf it\u2019s not next week, it\u2019s next month or six months. People are going to get hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the past two years, Uzun says she\u2019s been locked in a battle with the city over the removal of a towering, two-story elm tree in her backyard. Despite repeated requests, she says progress has been slow.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been opening these 311 complaints with the city, and the majority of them have been closed with no action,\u201d Uzun said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what the holdup is.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cracks are now spreading along the walls of her tenant\u2019s apartment, damage Uzun says is tied to the expanding roots beneath the home. She says recent inspections by the city\u2019s Forestry Department and NYC Parks\u2019 GreenThumb program have led to little change.<\/p>\n
Darryl Montgomery, a steward and founder of Hancock Community Backyard Park, says the issue has been known for years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s an annual inspection of the park,\u201d Montgomery said. \u201cEvery year someone has noticed this, and it has gone unaddressed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Running out of options, Uzun applied for a permit to remove the tree herself \u2014 only to learn the cost would exceed $90,000 in penalties.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have to remove the tree, pay them a penalty to get the permit, and then I also have to fix the foundation of my house,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
NYC Parks told News 12 that a recent assessment found the tree to be low risk for now but noted it lacks enough space to remain stable. The agency says the tree is currently scheduled for removal in early 2026.<\/p>\n
