{"id":81062,"date":"2025-12-25T20:00:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T20:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/81062\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T20:00:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T20:00:06","slug":"rainfall-hits-southern-california-causing-evacuations-road-closures-and-fatalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/81062\/","title":{"rendered":"Rainfall hits Southern California, causing evacuations, road closures and fatalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A record-setting Christmas storm battering Southern California brought rushing floods that have already killed at least three people. <\/p>\n<p>Water and debris, along with mudslides, have led to evacuation orders and water rescues as the deluge slams regions still recovering from wildfires earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Three people have been killed, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/live\/christmas-eve-travel-warnings-issued-in-southern-california-as-storm-brings-risk-of-flooding-mudslides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass <a href=\"https:\/\/mayor.lacity.gov\/news\/holiday-storm-evening-update-mayor-bass-issues-local-declaration-emergency-continue-citys\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declared an emergency<\/a> as of Wednesday, including flash flood warnings and evacuation orders. Road closures reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LANLASD\/status\/2004093629795881334?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">LA County Sheriff<\/a> have triggered travel delays across the region.<\/p>\n<p>The storm began on Christmas eve with flash floods and mudslides.  Matthew Hoen\/ZUMA \/ SplashNews.com<\/p>\n<p>The San Bernardino Sheriff\u2019s Department issued <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sbcountysheriff\/status\/2004008041168109610?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">evacuation orders<\/a> for communities up until the Los Angeles county line on Wednesday evening, as the area is slammed with mudslides and rushing water, worsened by the burn scars from earlier wildfires.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mayor.lacity.gov\/news\/holiday-storm-evening-update-mayor-bass-issues-local-declaration-emergency-continue-citys\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Evacuation orders<\/a> were also issued for the Palisades, Sunset, Hurst, and Ridgewood areas, with the LAPD personally knocking on doors of vulnerable homes. <\/p>\n<p>Officials reported that 380 homes were evacuated.  via REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Officials told The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-storms-atmospheric-river-los-angeles-mudslides-b89fa61ccee7eb96bd66a805fb78e933\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a> that 380 homes were given evacuation orders.<\/p>\n<p>As of Christmas morning, the sky has cleared slightly, allowing for officials to prepare for the next bout of rain expected Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s blue skies, no rain, so we\u2019re using this time to reinforce our troops in the area to get ready for the next band of rain we\u2019re expecting this afternoon and into tonight,\u201d San Bernardino County Fire Department Public Information Officer Christopher Prater told The New York Post at around 9:30 a.m. local time. <\/p>\n<p>Regions burned in the wildfires earlier this year were hardest hit.  Carlin Stiehl for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Prater said no rescues were conducted overnight, but firefighters continue to patrol the San Debrardino area. Crews are continuing to use equipment to try to clear the roads, taking advantage of a break in the storm. <\/p>\n<p>Flash flood warnings urging residents to get to higher ground and not to travel in flood waters have been issued by the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSLosAngeles\/status\/2004234143173849508?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow\">National Weather Service<\/a> for most of Southern California. Warnings were issued for Santa Barbara, Malibu and Topanga.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles County Fire Department <a href=\"https:\/\/lafd.org\/alert\/concluded-full-river-rescue-12242025-inc1735\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rescued<\/a> a 50-year-old man, alone with his cat and his dog, from the hood of a car in the Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood, and issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/lafd.org\/alert\/evacuation-order-zone-lfd0117-12242025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evacuation order<\/a> for the area on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Travel was impacted across Southern California.
