Instagram \/ @jmbp000<\/p>\n<p>An MTA worker on the other side of the gate was trying to pry the doors back open while she floundered helplessly, according to the video originally shared by a man named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jmbp000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Juan Manuel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Technicians told The Post that they suspect the woman was trying to sneak through the fare gate behind another commuter when the doors snapped shut. <\/p>\n<p>One MTA employee explained that \u201cthis happens when two people try to get through the door together. The sensor picks that up and closes the door on the second person.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A technician at a Bronx station told The Post that the snafu happened a few days ago. He explained that the only way to free someone from the gate\u2019s jaws is to shut off the automated door and open it manually.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the MTA is still testing the gates and have installed them at select stations.<\/p>\n<p>John Raine, a 23-year-old New Yorker, said that the MTA\u2019s turnstile overhaul is \u201cdystopian.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like having a controlling boyfriend,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s mad over engineering,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mia Rade, a 34-year-old New Yorker, encouraged people to simply \u201cpay attention\u201d and \u201cstart paying for the MTA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.57324219;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38022931\" width=\"338\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screen-Shot-2025-12-25-at-80138-PM.jpg\" alt=\"A person in a black coat and pants facing away from the camera, standing in front of elevator doors that are starting to close.\" class=\"wp-image-38022931\"  \/>An MTA worker tried to pry the doors back open and free the trapped straphanger, according to the viral video. Instagram \/ @jmbp000<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow stupid do you have to be to get your head stuck in there?\u201d her tourist brother, 27-year-old Alex Rade, added.<\/p>\n<p>Others online balked at the woman\u2019s misfortune \u2014 and were quick to blame the MTA. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat. Now the MTA is guillotining people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/nycrail\/comments\/1pvn1ie\/things_are_going_well\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">one user joked on Reddit<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess whoever designed this didn\u2019t think about human head decapitation. Can she sue for that???\u201d another person wondered.<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD said it did not have any record of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis video is from the first hours of the pilot and was in the news then, as we responded to reporters last week. The equipment is being monitored, and as part of the pilot, we are keeping an eye on how the fare gates work,\u201d the MTA told The Post in a statement Thursday night. <\/p>\n<p>Similar automated doors are used at transit train stations in Boston \u2014 with limited success. <\/p>\n<p>The alarms blare when the sensors catch two people shuffling through the doors at once, but they rarely close in time to snag the straggler. <\/p>\n<p>The MTA has installed scores of new measures to disincentivize fare-skipping, including the fare gate and garish \u201cfins\u201d on old turnstiles.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cfins\u201d and \u201csleeves,\u201d which will <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/19\/opinion\/mtas-7-3m-fins-are-a-joke-and-a-gift-to-fare-beaters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cost upward of $7 million<\/a> to install in each of the city\u2019s 472 subway stations, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/18\/us-news\/nyc-subway-fare-jumpers-easily-beat-anti-theft-fins-as-mta-spends-7-3m-to-bring-program-to-nearly-every-station\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have done little to dissuade straphangers<\/a> from dodging the ever-increasing fare. <\/p>\n<p>Some crafty commuters are even using the hurdle-like \u201cfins\u201d to give themselves an extra boost.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Stand clear of the closing doors, please!
