{"id":81618,"date":"2025-12-26T16:15:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-26T16:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/81618\/"},"modified":"2025-12-26T16:15:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T16:15:08","slug":"staten-island-woman-of-achievement-a-sculptor-and-consummate-volunteer-dies-at-96","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/81618\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island Woman of Achievement, a sculptor and consummate volunteer, dies at 96"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4QNHW5WAAJFJZJIPBSRRU5OJWE\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. &#8212; Madeline Cretella knew how to make a space beautiful. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VOCW37RPGNF7ZIHKRN6LAGHTQQ\">\u201cShe could walk into a room and move a few things around, and all of a sudden that room looked 100 times better than it did before she had walked in just a few minutes earlier,\u201d said her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Cretella. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6TGYM65DEZGGXOIWXORPTYDASA\">Cretella, an artist and a consummate volunteer, died on Dec. 16. She was 96 years old. The cause of death was complications from a fall. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Madeline Cretella\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/XNWDRUG7LJGOXEUXPD5AH4E4XQ.png\"  \/>Madeline Cretella.Family Photo<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7YZNMUWIXBDDJFN77DITMV74UQ\">She was born in 1929, the middle child of seven siblings who grew up in South Beach. Her father, Nicholas Mattia, worked as a carpenter and made furniture, and her mother, Florence, managed the household. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SCZN5U4URFHQ7KAJQZISZKSEPI\">In 1949, she married Frank Cretella. The pair went into business together, opening a Dairy Queen franchise in Elizabeth, New Jersey, while living on Lighthouse Hill. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SZ3FQ6AR75GBROMAL347AXOC5I\">When Dairy Queen changed its recipe, the Cretellas decided they wanted to more on and opened up their own shop. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E6T2XB5SDZCLDCXVUESLOOML44\">\u201cThey were very instrumental in starting the brand Magic Fountain,\u201d Jeanne Cretella said. \u201cThey felt that the product that they were able to offer through Magic Fountain was just a better product. They were committed to serving the best ice cream they could serve. They operated Magic Fountain for almost 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QYWCMZLO5BAK7DYIG62NTCSCTE\">Cretella, who had a lifelong interest in art, began her artistic career by making sketches. \u201cShe paid attention to the anatomy of the body,\u201d said her daughter, Jeannette DiChiara. \u201cShe explored oils and pastels, but her favorite was sculpting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"1985 Press Photo Madeline Cretella sculpts a piece entitled &quot;Migration&quot;\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3P2FQ5KKOFF3LKO5GGU5XNYHRY.JPG\"  \/>In this photo, taken Oct. 20, 1985, Madeline Cretella sculpts a piece titled &#8220;Migration.&#8221;(Advance\/SILive.com | Steve Zaffarano)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IF2CDMI7TJAOJLWJARQTT6OBHE\">Jeanne Cretella added: \u201cHer sculptures told a real story. She was a breast cancer survivor. Her artwork depicted some of the emotions that many people go through when they\u2019re dealing with such a serious illness. A lot of her work depicted the human body, and her artwork could be a little whimsical, but she really loved classical art. Her pieces just screamed of emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BJQMNY6ZOFHEZC646JN4ABPTY4\">Cretella painted landscapes and portraits, and made jewelry. \u201cShe was known for big, beautiful brooches.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AKUTXNRNJBA3TKF4WPY3AGZVJ4\">\u201cShe would make jewelry molds and have the moles filled with silver or gold,\u201d DiChiara said. \u201cAnd she was a decorator and a muralist. She used to paint murals for friends and family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CMJ5CAG64FD33DAVSQ7QOOM3JE\">Jeanne Cretella explained: \u201cEverything she did was self-taught. Because she was such a phenomenal artist, people assumed that she had formal training, and she didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M7J2553TI5DN7PYSGNMC4N3YJY\">Her art was exhibited on Staten Island and in Manhattan, including Borough Hall, the Newhouse Gallery, The Art Network, and Salmagundi Gallery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q3HGBBFTC5EWLL3XEBIMF454E4\">\u201cShe had such curiosity that if she saw anything that fancied her, she would learn how to do it,\u201d DiChiara said. \u201cThere was nothing she didn\u2019t want to have her hands in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y37KH7ZEZJGZVI34S4R7C6H7VM\">Cretella served as president of the Staten Island Artist Federation for three years. She volunteered for United Cerebral Palsy organization and AIDS Resource Foundation for Children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LRWTLTYYBRAMHCPEVQPTQGBZBY\">\u201cWhenever she heard of a need in the community, she was always volunteering her help,\u201d Jeanne Cretella said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EQGNFDAL2JFJJDULV2JM6NACXE\">She was known for her ability to plan events and decorate spaces. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G3YVNB43XZHHVNV27MBS7PMHUY\">\u201cShe was a great event planner from top to bottom, because she could imagine great, unique ideas for the themes, and then she knew how to carry it through and tie it all together,\u201d DiChiara said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DVEQ6E4LCBBM7HB4QMAJ2DQX3Q\">Jeanne Cretella added: \u201cMadeline would just get to work and design everything from the invitations to the tables and centerpieces,\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y75P4RRMZFHL7KZGBJUG6ZWVCU\">\u201cShe was all about family,\u201d she recalled. \u201cShe was all about creating a home that everyone knew that they were welcome to at any time. There was always room at the table for whoever showed up.
