{"id":81969,"date":"2025-12-27T01:34:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-27T01:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/81969\/"},"modified":"2025-12-27T01:34:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T01:34:08","slug":"winter-storm-on-staten-island-officials-warn-new-yorkers-to-stay-off-the-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/81969\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter storm on Staten Island: Officials warn New Yorkers to stay off the roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OYZKADGO55ABDLYJP75ZBFSYXU\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 While a post-Christmas winter storm brings more snow to the borough than it has seen in several years, officials are asking Staten Islanders to stay safe by staying home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2IIKAOW6J5DQDGBMEQWNOV2OUU\">At least until after the last flakes\u2014or sleet\u2014have fallen and the streets are clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZORIT5BY2ZBWBDFMZAGCUTVU2Q\">\u201cIf you must travel, use public transportation,\u201d Mayor Eric Adams said on Friday. He continued, \u201cI want to make clear: the city is ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3FJADKSQVFBSNMJ4MOS5JOIJCQ\">The storm, which started on Staten Island early Friday evening with a mix of sleet ahead of the heaviest snow, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/12\/weekend-snow-to-be-first-big-test-for-updated-snow-removal-plan-first-announced-in-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/12\/weekend-snow-to-be-first-big-test-for-updated-snow-removal-plan-first-announced-in-2023.html\">the first big test for the city\u2019s updated snow removal plan<\/a>, despite the new approach and technology being announced in 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"USIO5DWWS5APLGWE54WPEHAWM4\">Since then, the city has not seen a significant snow over 4 inches; and even as the system moved in on Friday, forecasters began to lower anticipated snow totals due to the amount of sleet on the front edge of the storm.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"AccuWeather snow forecast map\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/QTPKSNPR2FBRLOFIDH3CPC4XIM.jpg\"  \/>AccuWeather&#8217;s forecast map for the storm.AccuWeather.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PT5MAJ4AIRDFJDCKGRL3EL6ZJA\">Still, Gov. Kathy Hochul, as she declared a state of emergency, also urged New Yorkers to avoid travel after 6 p.m. on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HLTLRJEQCBGO3FA4R7EF7F7VYI\">And she, too, emphasized preparedness, telling 1010 WINS the state was positioning to, as much as possible, keep mass transit moving. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GLMPCT2C4FGCDJ4A3MWRHAMLHA\">\u201c(W)e\u2019re literally putting, for example, chains on the tires of our MTA buses that\u2019ll help them have better traction in the snow. We\u2019re already positioning people to clear the subway platforms and the outdoor stations. We have 220 miles of outdoor track that has to be maintained and cleared in the storm events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EYAB2NUTEJC4TO3CQYZNGQOTHU\">\u201cYou can imagine what a nightmare that can be when the snow comes down in heavy volumes and we have to manage that. So we\u2019re ready for it. We\u2019re experienced. We know how to deal with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2KWKQMKSQNHMVG3BNAO645FDT4\">On the waterways, the NYC Ferry shut down as the storm began Friday evening; at the start of the storm, the Staten Island Ferry was operating on a 20-minute schedule during the evening rush.<\/p>\n<p>Snow to wrap up early Saturday<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YL5MOE773ZCZFFRYPSXDZIANQY\">A clipper storm, as defined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Weather Service<\/a>, is a fast-moving storm that drops into the U.S. over the Great Lakes from Alberta, Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BB4NQCJ5GREITOG7CHVDY4HLI4\">Ahead of the storm, Peyton Simmers, a meteorologist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\">AccuWeather<\/a>, predicted the city would see 3-6 inches of snow before the storm was done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IJCOFDEHFJD2BF4YMHCBLXFOP4\">\u201cWe do expect a pretty good thump of snow to come in about after sunset, a little after 7 o\u2019clock &#8211; around 7 o\u2019clock &#8211; when the heaviest snow might get started in New York City,\u201d Simmers said. \u201cIt\u2019s not out of the question there could be some inch-per-hour snow rates within that band, so it could come down pretty quick and lay pretty quick in that 3-6 range that we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PON3FJHWZREMNIT5P2JCVQNBAQ\">Simmers predicts the snow will cease falling on the city by 8 a.m. Saturday.
