to popular eateries for almost a century has been razed to make room for a new mega-project. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VFPBAU467BGRBA6ILDHZPROM5M\">Demolition has been taking place at a high-visibility location on Bay Street, razing a collection of storefronts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G4B6HSFIDJHSNIJXHDNEUYYH7Q\">Among those is an address, 40 Bay St., that has been host to one popular eatery or another for 80 years. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"nws demolition\" class=\"article__image-content\" recent diner to call the spot home was Karl\u2019s Klipper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6GZHA64SENDVPCJYOA5H4LFFBA\">The Klipper was a mecca for borough patrons for 12 years before serving its last meal on Dec. 20, 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KTMCJJPQLJC5HNZH6BOQNICCSY\">The diner spot has been vacant since then. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2AJBRTIRXZHLPAOU5JKHYVGMKE\">The Klipper was known for its food and bar scene and was also a popular spot for musical performances and political and community gatherings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EBTANSC6FFDH3FUTVZ2NSQA2IY\">Before the Klipper, the St. George Clipper called the same address home. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZK4MGDJWBFHWHP2K545XHM3WIQ\">That restaurant, including its signature cocktail lounge, opened for business around 1941, according to Advance records, and closed in 1979.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Karls Klipper\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/UR5HLYEA3ZDXTEJFPNG7KYIOS4.JPG\"  \/>St. George Clipper resturant at 40 Bay St. is seen in 1949. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2ACAKAADMRASRIDNTF4YYHGCCM\">Before that, an eatery called the Bay Street Clipper was at 40 Bay St.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y2OBPMPE2FGWTDJOSUA5DZAI24\">A restaurant known as the St. George Diner was at the same address for a time in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M4OLJ72TTJESTF6SVPL4OZLKKE\">In addition to the diner location, the old home of Honor Wines and other establishments at the Bay Street site were also razed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2BJCPH373NBAVLLERPIMNDTB7E\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/12\/high-rise-slated-for-former-home-of-iconic-diner-beloved-wine-shop.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/12\/high-rise-slated-for-former-home-of-iconic-diner-beloved-wine-shop.html\">The site is set to be the new home of an eight-story, mixed-use building, the Advance\/SILive.com has learned.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LSFRIN3YT5B2LKJ5FTPQL6TEVA\">The city Buildings Department in March approved an application to build the high-rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VX42XJFW6RDFVHTSLNMHMIU2RY\">A Buildings filing shows that the building will have 39,537 square feet of residential space and 2,614 square feet of commercial space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WY7OSN2XZBAG7DUCIS6CJ5JLRA\">It is not known when construction on the high-rise will begin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WYFLGJIOKFBFBKFTIVNNVWS5ZU\">The architectural firm listed on Buildings documents, Raymond Chan
