Disgraced former Rep. George Santos,<\/a> R-NY, took to social media Saturday to thank President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0for commuting his prison sentence, saying the commander in chief\u2019s \u201ckindness\u201d and \u201cgenerosity\u201d moved him deeply.<\/p>\n

Trump announced the commutation late Friday, ordering Santos\u2019 immediate release from federal prison,<\/a> where he was serving a seven-year sentence for wire fraud and\u00a0aggravated identity theft\u00a0in New Jersey.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a lengthy post on X,<\/a> Santos expressed gratitude for both his faith and the President.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday, I was given something I never thought I\u2019d have again: a true second chance at life,\u201d Santos posted to X Saturday evening. \u201cFirst and foremost, I want to thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for never abandoning me. \u2026 I also want to express my deepest gratitude to President Donald J. Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santos said\u00a0he spoke personally with Trump earlier Saturday,<\/a> a conversation he said he \u201cwill never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump reminded me that\u00a0in this country\u00a0we love so much, no mistake, no hardship, and no fall from grace can take away the possibility of renewal,\u201d Santos said. \u201cHis faith in second chances reignited my own, and for that, I will be forever thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former congressman also thanked his supporters who stood by him and said that, going forward, he plans to focus on prison reform, inspired by Trump\u2019s historic peace deal he secured between Israel and Hamas earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cInspired by President Trump\u2019s work toward peace in the Middle East, I am dedicating myself to doing good, to building bridges instead of walls,\u201d Santos said. \u201cMy focus will be on prison reform and accountability, ensuring that those in power uphold the dignity and humanity of every person in their care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Santos also accused officials at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, New Jersey, of mistreatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one should ever be dehumanized or degraded like I was by the FCI Fariton Warden Kelly and Assistant Warden Nobile,\u201d Santos said. \u201cMy goal now is to turn my past into something meaningful, to help create a justice system that truly believes in rehabilitation and second chances.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his Truth Social post announcing the commutation, Trump described Santos as \u201csomewhat of a rogue\u201d but argued his punishment was excessive.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!\u201d Trump said. \u201cGeorge has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!\u201d<\/p>\n

In April, Santos was sentenced to 87 months in prison after pleading guilty to deceiving donors and stealing the identities of nearly a dozen people to funnel fraudulent contributions to his campaign.<\/p>\n

He reported to FCI Fairton in July.<\/p>\n

The former representative, elected in 2022, served\u00a0in Congress\u00a0for close to a year before being ousted in 2023 by his House colleagues.<\/p>\n
