STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The National Weather Service has expanded a winter weather advisory to include Staten Island and the rest of the New York City area.<\/p>\n

The weather advisory warns of a chance of freezing rain until around 10 p.m. Sunday, with a \u201clight glaze\u201d of ice possibly to follow, according to the weather alert<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Along with New York City, the winter weather alert includes parts of Connecticut along with Nassau and Suffolk counties.<\/p>\n

The National Weather Service also warns that sidewalks, roads and bridges can be very slippery due to ice accumulating.<\/p>\n

The weather service is advising people to slow down while driving and to prepare for possible power outages due to the ice. <\/p>\n

Later on Sunday, the surface temperatures should rise above freezing and turn any precipitation to just rain, according to the weather alert. <\/p>\n

Throughout the upcoming week, temperatures are expected to fluctuate<\/a>, leading to more treacherous, icy conditions.<\/p>\n

Warmer temperatures, combined with rain in the forecast, will cause substantial melting. Then, temperatures will fall again later in the week.<\/p>\n
