{"id":83358,"date":"2025-12-29T10:49:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T10:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/83358\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T10:49:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T10:49:11","slug":"city-to-honor-8-including-pediatrician-political-activist-and-9-11-hero-with-renamed-staten-island-streets-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/83358\/","title":{"rendered":"City to honor 8, including pediatrician, political activist and 9\/11 hero, with renamed Staten Island streets in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RJBUGALT4BDWRNQFLHDRV57JCU\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 The names of seven deceased Staten Islanders and one century-old organization will adorn new street signs in 2026, after a bill approving co-namings was passed by the City Council on Dec. 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UBGC4RTIBRHGZDEHPXWUSFQBAI\">The honor is one of the most significant ways the city acknowledges the outstanding lives and impact of residents, after their deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X4L2Q6UVGBFDPPTUME4S7QQ4YY\">Across the city the Council approved 77 co-namings of streets and other public places in 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W4CPECWG4REPRELIHPF27WIZ7E\">Councilmember Frank Morano, a Republican representing the South Shore, spoke at a recent Council meeting about the importance of next year\u2019s street co-namings in his district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LHK3PMTAIND2ZCMYQ6DZ3JJP3I\">Acknowledging that he was taking the floor during a long meeting focused on a range of legislative matters, he said of the co-namings, \u201cthese are the kind of moments that remind you why public service matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SDZXDBVEXVHXBCV66UMI63IHCI\">The process of requesting to have a city block co-named requires a series of approvals from both the local community and the City Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B2MPFYQQKBH45IIAP4XO5CWE4U\">In order to have a street co-named in their honor, a person must have passed away and made significant contributions to their community during their lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RYI5QMBWERBORD3C7FSD7N33IA\">The location, which must possess either historical or personal significance to the chosen name, must first be approved by the local community board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZLFWQNO5SNG6RIDUAI7UHPDVTY\">In 2026, the co-namings will be:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WN2C7ICNXJCRZCOQHA57EZI47A\">Sarah Power Way at the intersection of St. Marks Place and Wall Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NHCAAMWTUNE4HJKUK7LDIH4ZFA\">A resident of St. Marks Place, Sarah Power was an architect and active member of the St. George Civic Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YGZOKDB4DVB3LNOWNA72RXWUNE\">According to Advance\/SILive.com records, she advocated for retaining the neighborhood\u2019s historic character amid development, and volunteered in area beautification efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TM4BUCDA7FAA5MZK6NSB6JPHO4\"><a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"\">She died in October 2023 at age 58.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-gallery-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762719337_SOVVZPV76FEF3GFXJVAXQ77VN4.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-gallery-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/RVDHRWOTLNFUJFTICUZDGITHXA.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>1\/127<\/p>\n<p class=\"image-gallery-caption\">Staten Island NAACP celebrates 100 years of service to the community<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NEMBLDXYWVGNLKRPEZIE33S5QY\">Staten Island NAACP Way &#8211; Johnson, which he said \u201cdeserves to be remembered far beyond our neighborhood.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IHPPUAAAJFCEHFR5SOQ5C2U6IM\">\u201cWilliam Johnson graduated from Tottenville High School, served as a New York City police officer and answered his nation\u2019s call during World War II as a radio operator and aerial gunner aboard a B24 bomber with the 8th airforce,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TMORH7HOCJAK5KJWOTGUYCWMGI\">\u201cHe flew dangerous missions over Europe and on July 2, 1944 his aircraft was shot down returning from a mission&#8230;He was buried at Normandy, awarded a Purple Heart and finally, 80 years later I\u2019m proud that we\u2019ll have a street named for him in my district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dr. Melvin Koplow\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GPEFMX7KBZAPJN7PWA2354E7HQ.jpg\"  \/>Dr. Melvin Koplow passed away at the age of 79 on March 21, 2024. Daly Way at the intersection of Cloverdale Avenue and Oakdale Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LCHXJWABSRHNVHF6LHMFGOIYLE\">Michael W. Daly of Great Kills, a retired firefighter, died in November 2023 following a long battle with a 9\/11-related illness. He was 56.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NHKD3HJ25ZEBPNJRPYH4KPFDSM\">Daly was born in Brooklyn, according to the family obituary. He joined the FDNY in 1999 and was eventually assigned to Ladder 87 in Annadale. He retired from the department in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JPVBHCWALNF4POJHQIDEHOBPYM\">After surviving and helping to save others during rescue efforts following the 9\/11 terrorist attacks, Daly would go on to battle for his life when he was diagnosed with two different types of cancer, the Advance\/SILive.com reported in 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4JVOXU662RC7JIYW4FIV5H5XBM\">Despite his illness, Daly was not only active in charitable causes, but he cared deeply about the safety of his community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6PXASFVAQ5F5FLEKKTGQMV7BPI\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2023\/11\/retired-staten-island-firefighter-56-succumbs-to-911-illness-he-was-deeply-engaged-in-his-community.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2023\/11\/retired-staten-island-firefighter-56-succumbs-to-911-illness-he-was-deeply-engaged-in-his-community.html\">More about Michael Daly &gt;&gt; <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3I4GDP6MDNH4JMJMPQQ4FATL6E\">Dominick Dellegrazie Way at the intersection of Westfield Avenue and Bloomingdale Road<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OB3EWF7VJBAXPHQLKE6LLR2BYI\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bedellpizzo.com\/obituaries\/dominick-dellegrazie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bedellpizzo.com\/obituaries\/dominick-dellegrazie\">According to a family obituary<\/a>, Dominick Dellegrazie died in May at age 74.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E6F66TOPKRCSHFQOQJ2BR4QEO4\">\u201cHe had a long and distinguished career, serving as a New York City police officer, a Captain for the Sea Gate Police in Brooklyn, and later working within the Department of Consumer Affairs,\u201d the obituary reads. \u201cHis entrepreneurial spirit led him to own and operate Double Dees Chariot Collision for 35 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2BSKFPXBZNEFVAB3KX233BOO7A\">He was the president of the Staten Island\u2019s Fraternal Order of Police lodge #117, a retired NYPD detectives group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7HYVACPONZHALD5ZXT36MPKISY\">Chris Walsh Way at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Rockaway Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"F262AE2635HDZCVUCT56E2S6BQ\">Chris Walsh, who was a beloved and strict organizer of several sports leagues in the borough died in August after a battle with cancer. He was 64.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UNVF7MQW45HB7NFT62KX3PDE2Y\">Morano spoke at the Council meeting about Walsh, saying he \u201cwasn\u2019t looking for recognition.
