Maimonides will officially merge with NYC Health+Hospitals next year, officials announced Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Maimonides Medical Center will officially merge with NYC Health+Hospitals next year, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday.\n<\/p>\n<p>The move, expected to be completed by April 2026, will bring private safety net hospital Maimonides into the city\u2019s public healthcare system. Court documents allege that the deal is worth $15 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say the merger, which must first be approved by the state\u2019s Attorney General, will support the financially-struggling Maimonides and allow the hospital to stay afloat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy bringing two storied health care systems together under one umbrella, we will ensure that Brooklynites, and all New Yorkers, can continue to receive the high-quality care that they deserve,\u201d Adams said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-235688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1767024128_329_Screenshot-2025-12-22-at-4.57.41-PM.jpg\" alt=\"maimonides exterior\" width=\"700\" height=\"449\"  \/>The merger is expected to be completed by April 1, 2026. .\u201d Photo courtesy of Google Maps\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The mayor said that NYC Health+Hospitals is \u201cthe envy of cities everywhere,\u201d and that the merger \u201cpreserves and strengthens care\u201d in Brooklyn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In joining Health+Hospitals, Maimonides will be entitled to higher Medicaid reimbursement rates only available to public hospitals. The higher reimbursements are expected to generate \u201cmillions of dollars\u201d in additional revenue every year, a Maimonides spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynpaper.com\/maimonides-works-join-nyc-health-hospitals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Brooklyn Paper<\/a> last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A safety-net hospital, more than 80% of Maimonides\u2019 patients are insured by Medicare and Medicaid, according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/maimo.org\/about-us\/community-health-needs-assessment-service-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Community Services Plan<\/a>, and the hospital cares for all patients, even if they can\u2019t pay. Medicaid and Medicare don\u2019t reimburse hospitals for the full cost of care, leaving many safety-net hospitals strapped for cash and facing even more dire circumstances with federal Medicaid cuts on the horizon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With three hospitals and a number of outpatient and specialty facilities, Maimonides has been struggling financially for several years. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crainsnewyork.com\/health-pulse\/maimonides-health-falls-back-deficit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Crain\u2019s<\/a>, the hospital lost $15 billion in the first three quarters of 2025 and earned just $1.5 million in revenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-235689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1767024128_251_all-maimonides-midwood-hospital-expanded-network-2022-04-0102BCPRINT_WEB.jpg\" alt=\"maimonides midwood\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital, which Maimonides took over in 2022. File photo by Ben Brachfeld<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoining NYC Health + Hospitals will allow Maimonides to build on our history of providing outstanding specialty care to the communities we have proudly served for decades,\u201d said Maimonides President and CEO Ken Gibbs, in a statement. \u201cWe are grateful to have a partner who shares our commitment to working with communities to meet their needs, and we are grateful to Mayor Adams, Governor Hochul, and Dr. Katz for giving us this unique opportunity to expand access to our care across Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>The merger will be supported by a $2.2 billion, five-year grant from New York State.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Officials said that patient care will \u201ccontinue uninterrupted during the transition.\u201d Dr.Health+Hospitals CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz said the Borough Park-based Maimonides, which treats a large Orthodox Jewish population, will \u201cretain its unique character and commitment to the communities it serves.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The merger will also allow Maimonides to start using the electronic health platform Epic, which City Hall said would improve care coordination and allow patients to access their records and contact their providers online.<\/p>\n<p>This is a breaking news story and will be updated.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Maimonides Medical Center Ken Gibbs at an October 2025 ribbon-cutting.
