NEW YORK\u00a0\u2013 After more\u00a0snow\u00a0bombarded the\u00a0Great Lakes<\/a>, portions of\u00a0New York\u00a0could see feet of snow on New Year\u2019s Day<\/a>, as gusty northwest\u00a0winds\u00a0from the east will continue to usher in cold air, creating the perfect conditions for a heavy lake-effect storm<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Parts of western and upstate New York, downwind of\u00a0Lake Erie<\/a>\u00a0and Ontario, are expected to see a lot more snow, prompting a State of Emergency in New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The eastern shores of\u00a0Lake Michigan<\/a>, parts of\u00a0upstate New York<\/a>\u00a0and northwestern\u00a0Pennsylvania\u00a0could see 3 to 5 inches.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0downwind of lakes Erie and Ontario, including areas just south of\u00a0Buffalo, NY, and southward into\u00a0Erie, PA,\u00a0Syracuse\u00a0and the\u00a0Tug Hill Plateau\u00a0could see even higher amounts, with localized totals of 12 to 18 inches.<\/p>\n

Overnight, Syracuse has already seen 10 inches of snow within just four hours and more is on the way.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The storm could cause low visibility and wind gusts up to 70 mph near the lake shores.<\/p>\n

Governor Hochul is urging New Yorkers in affected areas to avoid travel and if possible, work from home, as treacherous roads and near whiteout conditions are expected.<\/p>\n

As of yesterday, more than 7,500 utility workers engaged in damage assessment, response, repair and restoration efforts, stated Hochul.<\/p>\n

Whiteout conditions are expected in several areas of Western and Central New York tomorrow, especially in the Syracuse-metro area.<\/p>\n

Coastal flooding\u00a0is also possible in some areas as the strong winds push the water levels above normal.<\/p>\n

Not only is New York under a State of Emergency,\u00a0Winter Storm Warnings<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Lake Effect Snow Warnings\u00a0have also been issued for Syracuse, Buffalo and Erie, PA through Friday morning. \u00a0<\/p>\n

According to FOX Forecast Center, a dip in the jet stream settled just south of the\u00a0Northern Tier<\/a>, causing the northwest flow to continue to funnel air over the warmer water of the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n

Several weaker disturbances embedded within the jet stream will track from west to east, supplying additional moisture and potentially enhancing snowfall across the Great Lakes and upstate New York through the end of the week.<\/p>\n

NYS has expanded the State of Emergency due to ongoing lake effect snow & high winds. <\/p>\n

On New Year\u2019s Eve into early New Year\u2019s Day, a weaker\u00a0clipper<\/a>\u00a0is expected to move south from\u00a0Canada\u00a0through the Great Lakes, increasing the intensity of snowfall across western New York and portions of eastern Lake Erie.<\/p>\n

This could even extend further into the Northeast, bringing lighter, decorative flakes to\u00a0New York City<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Boston.<\/p>\n

This could cause a post-holiday travel headache as millions are expected to travel on New Year\u2019s Eve and New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n
