Thirteen Manhattan restaurants have made an intriguing list measuring the \u201cmost authentic Italian restaurants in America,\u201d which was conducted by a professional cuisine training institute\u2014known as The Cooking School Italy\u2014<\/a>that reviewed thousands of TripAdvisor reviews.<\/p>\n

Five of these restaurants cracked the top fifteen, which The Cooking School says \u201c[highlights] the borough\u2019s role as a central hub for high-quality Italian dining.\u201d No restaurants in New York City\u2019s outer boroughs appear to have made the top 50 list.<\/p>\n

The Cooking School Italy<\/a> says that they made the list after surveying \u201crestaurants in all US cities with more than 250,000 residents, looking for keywords such as \u2018authentic,\u2019 \u2018traditional,\u2019 and \u2018genuine.\u2019\u201d Restaurants needed to have a rating above 4.0 (out of 5.0) on Trip Advisor, plus more than 1,000 total reviews.<\/p>\n

\u201dThe study highlights that diners notice and value the elements that make Italian cuisine feel authentic, from traditional cooking methods to the flavors and presentation that reflect Italian culinary traditions,\u201d Cooking School Italy National Director Andrea Rochetti said.<\/p>\n

A couple of these restaurants are notably located on famed thoroughfares in the enclave of Little Italy, namely Mulberry Street.<\/p>\n

#6: Kest\u00e9 Pizza e Vino \u2013 77 Fulton St.<\/p>\n

#7: Capizzi \u2013 547 9th Ave.<\/p>\n

#8: Benito One \u2013 174 Mulberry St.<\/p>\n

#10: Pizza Arte \u2013 69 W. 55th St.<\/p>\n

#15: Rafaele \u2013 29 A. 7th Ave. South<\/p>\n

#18: La Masseria \u2013 235 W. 48th St.<\/p>\n

#19: Don Antonio \u2013 309 W. 50th St.<\/p>\n

#20: Mercato \u2013 359 W. 39th St.<\/p>\n

#26: Patsy\u2019s Italian Restaurant \u2013 236 W. 56th St.<\/p>\n

#35: Rubirosa \u2013 235 Mulberry St.<\/p>\n

#36 (Tie): Olio E Pi (3 Greenwich Ave.) & Il Corso (54 W. Greenwich Ave.)<\/p>\n

#41: Tavola \u2013 488 9th Ave.<\/p>\n

According to the survey, the top-rated Manhattan restaurant\u2014Kest\u00e9 Pizza\u2014had 416 \u201cauthenticity mentions,\u201d and maintained a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor over 1,236 reviews. The runner-up restaurant, Capizzi, maintained a 4.4 rating\u2014with 399 authenticity mentions\u2013after 1,846 reviews.<\/p>\n

Kest\u00e9 makes its pizza in the Neapolitan style, and boasts of using \u201clong fermentation and precise heat\u201d to create its \u201cauthentic\u201d slices. Neapolitan pizza, of course, hails from the Southern Italian city of Naples. It\u2019s partially defined by its airy crust, which puffs up around the pie\u2019s sides; \u201ctrue\u201d Neapolitan sauce is derived from either San Marzano tomatoes or those harvested from the volcanic plains of Mount Vesuvius, known as Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio.<\/p>\n

Indeed, Neapolitan pizza is included on UNESCO\u2019s list of items that maintain \u201cintangible cultural heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n

For curious travelers, the survey\u2019s top prize went to Al Dente Restorante, located in Boston. Second place and third place were awarded to establishments in Texas and Wisconsin, respectively. The survey, however, noted that \u201cEast Coast dominance is clear in the findings.\u201d<\/p>\n
