{"id":85477,"date":"2025-12-31T13:52:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T13:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/85477\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T13:52:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T13:52:08","slug":"staten-island-hs-girls-basketball-olivia-dimonda-surges-sea-past-tottenville-74-43","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/85477\/","title":{"rendered":"Staten Island HS girls\u2019 basketball: Olivia DiMonda surges Sea past Tottenville, 74-43"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XDFIILM2FNGP5JXXCAK3LAITIY\">With the Borough Cup Tournament less than a month away, the public got a teaser for the tourney in the Battle of Huguenot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O5OQT4CCQ5ACNBN6XRVCE22BSQ\">Pitting CHSAA AAA team St. Joseph by-the-Sea against PSAL 4A program Tottenville in the biggest regular-season Island interleague contest, many wondered who would take home the win (hence the SRO crowd in Sea\u2019s gym, on the night before New Year\u2019s Eve no less.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SFTDUI2GBBHZNKX4BB3U4FBKIM\">And, in the end, it was the Vikings who won big.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RRSADMR2TZEU3DTUD4DMELNK5E\">Olivia DiMonda, scoring 19 points and recording two steals, led Sea to a 74-43 non-league victory over the Pirates Tuesday night. Giovanna Grima added in 16 points for the home team while Alicia Conti, recording a career-high 15 points, had a double-double with 12 rebounds, two steals and a block.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"26UMX5ZPLZFIHN7UETUUF2PMNE\">Brooke Molloy (five rebounds, steal) and Lila Goldstein combined for 11 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WSLCEUY3RZA4JLFOU4Y3AB7EUQ\">Improving to 5-3 overall, Sea head coach Josh Suslak lauded the play of DiMonda, Grima and Maria O\u2019Connell (four points, nine rebounds) for their efforts in generating plays on both ends of the court.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sea vs Tottenville girls' basketball\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/TN3M6EM7Y5HUJOCWBAU74RIILI.jpg\"  \/>St. Joseph by-the-Sea versus Tottenville High School on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025. (Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)(Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BWWNGSJRAVHK7GOU3UVBY6AVUY\">\u201cWe\u2019re only going to go as far as those three girls can take us, especially with a young team and players still learning their roles and finding their place here,\u201d said Suslak of his senior captains. \u201cBut, when those three are moving the ball well and making good decisions, that\u2019s when I think we could be tough to beat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"REIGKZ4WFNCN5IW5YHSB7LP5NE\">Falling to 7-2 overall, Tottenville was led by Grace Anderson (13 points, four rebounds, steal) and Brianna Ardolic (10 points, three rebounds, steal). Gabriella Ortiz (four caroms, steals) and Araya Lichtman (five rebounds) combined for 12 markers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WZ7ANZKBINGZFHRDYV2BVTQF2Q\">The visitors started the game hot, forcing a Sea turnover on its opening possession and four different Pirates finding the hoop for an 8-1 run. Sea went to the free-throw line nine times, with Conti going 6 for 7 and DiMonda 7 for 9 (fouled while attempting a trey.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TMTCAHM2KRHVHI6Z5QJK4MNJEE\">Conti, in particular, sparked Sea on both ends of the court when it struggled to get going. What she does to give us an edge on the 50\/50 ball is huge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L6GYF4M7GBB4VM422TYQ2N4NK4\">In the second stanza, Sea quickly found its groove on both ends of the court. Grima added six points while O\u2019Connell scored all her markers in the quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KXN7H7XGWJH3TKT5XTLI3VVV2A\">With a \u201chand down, man down\u201d philosophy, DiMonda shifted the game\u2019s momentum in Sea\u2019s favor for good. Also tasked with guarding Anderson, the senior held the guard scoreless in the first and last quarters of the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6E62HBMVUVDJLFDHZ7WC2WK4YM\">\u201cBasically, if [the defender\u2019s hand] is down, I just shoot the ball,\u201d said the senior. \u201cThose two threes were a momentum-changer, but we [also] came together as a team and had more people scoring and swinging the ball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DNG4AONH5FCZRJ3UUZ4L7HHSXM\">\u201cWe\u2019re a really fast team, so we tried to slow them down and just picked up the pace in the second quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sea vs Tottenville girls' basketball\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/HMD32YTTXZBQ7DMOXERFKVCQHI.jpg\"  \/>St. Joseph by-the-Sea versus Tottenville High School on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025. (Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)(Annie DeBiase for the Advance\/SILive.com)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7V2USLPF2NCMFJZIQ6MTUIWK7M\">\u201cWith a player like Olivia, you can\u2019t strap a saddle on a Mustang &#8211; you just have to let her go,\u201d laughed Suslak. \u201cI\u2019ve held my breath on some wild ones she takes and we\u2019re still trying to rein her in, but [today] she played within herself and hit a couple big threes for us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2LELL6UJTVEYPD6NJZHWAXJLZY\">\u201cOn the defensive end, taking out Grace was her No. 1 objective. You can\u2019t let a player of that caliber get hot, so what Olivia did was big for us and it\u2019s exactly what I expected from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3YWI4Y46T5GCFFZO3GORW2LOUM\">Sea coasted the remainder of the contest, only allowing Tottenville to score 15 points in the second half.
