While many in New York will be watching the Times Square ball drop or out partying to ring in the new year, mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani<\/a> will mark midnight differently– taking the oath to become the city\u2019s next mayor.<\/p>\n

When Will Mamdani Be Sworn In?<\/p>\n

Mamdani will be officially sworn into office at an abandoned City Hall subway station, beneath the office he is set to hold. The station has been out of use since 1945 and is known for its Gilded Age arches.<\/p>\n

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is set to swear Mamdani into office, remarked on the location in an X post, writing<\/a>, \u201cOur subways connect us all, and they represent exactly what our next mayor is fighting for: a city every New Yorker can thrive in.\u201d<\/p>\n

The small, private ceremony will take place at midnight. <\/p>\n

On New Year\u2019s Day, Mamdani will be the first mayor to be sworn in over the Quran. His senior advisor, Zara Rahim, has said he will use at least three special Quran\u2019s for his various ceremonies. Senator Bernie Sanders will administer the oath of office that day.<\/p>\n

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, another progressive who has supported Mamdani\u2019s campaign and local New Yorker, will be present at the inauguration<\/a>. In a statement, Mamdani said he was \u201chonored that she\u2019ll be a part of our historic City Hall inauguration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani will also host a public block party celebrating his inauguration outside of City Hall on January 1. His inaugural program, called \u201cInauguration of a New Era,” is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET.<\/a><\/p>\n

For the block party, his transition team recommends people arrive outside of City Hall between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. to \u201csecure a great spot and enjoy the music before the ceremony.\u201d The event is free, but an online RSVP is necessary.<\/p>\n

People who want to watch Mamdani’s inauguration\u00a0are<\/a> encouraged to register online for the link to the livestream. Several local outlets, including ABC Channel 7 NY, will also be providing live coverage of the event, available to stream.<\/p>\n

When Was Mamdani Elected?<\/p>\n

Mamdani has shaken up New York City<\/a> politics, having won the ranked-choice Democratic primary in June, prompting former Governor Andrew Cuomo to run as an independent and Mayor\u00a0Eric Adams<\/a>\u00a0to drop out months later. Mamdani then beat Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in November’s general election.<\/p>\n

\"\"What We Know About Mamdani’s Wife, Rama Duwaji\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rama Duwaji, 28, is a Syrian-American illustrator<\/a> and animator based in Brooklyn. On her website<\/a>, she says she often takes a break from technology mediums and works with hand-built ceramics. She will be the city\u2019s first-ever Muslim First Lady, and among the youngest.<\/p>\n

Duwaji was born in Houston, Texas, and moved to Dubai when she was 9, according to CNN. She attended college at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar before moving back to the United States to complete her degrees in Richmond and then New York.<\/p>\n

On her website, Duwaji says her work has appeared on the BBC, as well as in\u00a0The New Yorker\u00a0and\u00a0Vogue.\u00a0Her artwork often carries a political message, including criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza since October 7, 2023, and reflections on other crises in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Possibly some of her most famous works are Mamdani\u2019s campaign logo and branding. A distinct yellow \u201cZohran\u201d with a red drop shadow, set against a Democratic blue background, has become instantly recognizable to New Yorkers in recent months. In a recent profile of her,\u00a0The Cut\u00a0noted that the styling of the Z and the R was her idea.<\/p>\n
