A\u00a0Somali-run day care in Minneapolis<\/a>\u00a0is claiming somebody broke in and stole \u201cimportant documents,\u201d\u00a0but cops say the facility didn\u2019t report anything was actually taken.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The alleged burglary comes as the national spotlight shines on the unfolding multibillion-dollar fraud scandal involving Minnesota human services, with particular scrutiny on day care facilities run by Somali immigrants after dozens of people from the community have been busted for pilfering state funds.<\/p>\n

Nasrulah Mohamed, manager of Nakomis Day Care Center, told reporters that a suspect entered through the kitchen at the rear of the facility, damaging a wall and breaking into the building\u2019s office, sometime on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

He said the alleged prowler stole \u201cimportant documentation\u201d including children\u2019s enrollment information, employee documentation and checkbooks.<\/p>\n

However \u201cno loss was reported to officers,\u201d according to a preliminary report by the Minneapolis Police Department.<\/p>\n

MPD noted that the center later reached out with additional information, but the updated police report was not immediately available.<\/p>\n

Video of the purported break-in shared by Nakomis Day Care\u00a0showed a hole in the wall in what appeared to be a utility closet with nearly stacked piles of cinder blocks behind the drywall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mohamed blamed\u00a0last week\u2019s viral video by YouTuber Nick Shirley<\/a>, in which he visited nearly a dozen day care facilities looking for evidence of fraud, for the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is devastating news, and we don\u2019t know why this is targeting our Somali community as one video made by a specific individual made this all happen,\u201d he said, claiming they\u2019ve received \u201chateful\u201d and \u201cthreatening\u201d messages over the last several days.<\/p>\n

A manager of the center said the alleged prowler stole \u201cimportant documentation\u201d including children\u2019s enrollment information, employee documentation and checkbooks. KSTP<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is frightening and exhausting,\u201d he said, calling Shirley\u2019s reporting \u201cfalse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nakomis Day Care Center was not one of the facilities featured in Shirley\u2019s video, which has been viewed over 110 million times.<\/p>\n

At least $1 billion in fraud has been uncovered by authorities in Minneapolis so far, including fraudulent food, housing and child care payments, with warnings from the US Attorney\u2019s Office that the true figure could be as high as $9 billion.<\/p>\n

Ninety-two people have been arrested in connection with the scheme, 80 of whom are Somali immigrants.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday night, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced it was\u00a0freezing all child care payments to Minnesota\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 which totaled $185 million in 2025 alone \u2014 unless proof is provided that the payments are legitimate.<\/p>\n

In response, embattled Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who has faced growing criticism for standing idly by as a billion dollars or more taxpayer funds disappeared to fraudsters on his watch, blamed the Trump administration in a social media post.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Trump\u2019s long game,\u201d Walz wrote on X Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve spent years cracking down on fraudsters. It\u2019s a serious issue \u2013 but this has been his plan all along. He\u2019s politicizing the issue to defund programs that help Minnesotans.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post visited several of the day cares Shirley spotlighted in his video, including Quality \u201cLearing\u201d Center, which was suspiciously bustling with children despite the state Department of children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) saying it had shuttered last week.<\/p>\n

DCYF later issued a puzzling correction that the \u201cLearing\u201d center had initially said it was closing, but later said it was staying open.<\/p>\n
