Afterwards, she congratulated Mamdani, giving him and his wife Rama Duwaji a hug before jogging off the stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cBread and Roses\u201d was a fitting choice for Mamdani\u2019s inauguration ceremony. The 34-year-old democratic socialist ran his campaign on issues that speak to the core of the song: better working and living conditions for the everyday people of New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOriginally a 1911 poem by James Oppenheim inspired by the women\u2019s suffrage and labor movements in the United States, the words got a second life when singer-songwriter Mimi Fari\u00f1a\u00a0recorded her version of the poem in 1974. (Fari\u00f1a, the younger sister of folk icon Joan Baez, died in 2001.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDacus has been a staunch supporter of Mamdani, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/zohran-mamdani-lucy-dacus-performs-all-things-go-sufjan-1235436712\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bringing him out on stage<\/a> during her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/all-things-go\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All Things Go<\/a> performance in September. \u201cI feel such love and joy in the crowd this evening, and this is what our city should feel like,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cIt should be a city where trans New Yorkers are cherished, a city where our queer neighbors are celebrated, and a city where each and every New Yorker can be the fullest version of themselves,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd it has to be a city that all of us can afford, whether you\u2019re an artist, or a dreamer, or someone who works the night shifts.
