{"id":87284,"date":"2026-01-02T13:10:24","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T13:10:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/87284\/"},"modified":"2026-01-02T13:10:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T13:10:24","slug":"a-total-of-24-received-approval-for-honor-of-staten-island-street-renaming-full-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/87284\/","title":{"rendered":"A total of 24 received approval for honor of Staten Island street renaming: Full list"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VTHGNLOPGZBKZLWTLPLK4MVAKA\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/12\/city-to-honor-8-including-pediatrician-political-activist-and-911-hero-with-renamed-staten-island-streets-in-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/12\/city-to-honor-8-including-pediatrician-political-activist-and-911-hero-with-renamed-staten-island-streets-in-2026.html\">The deceased Staten Islanders recently approved for street renaming honors<\/a> are among 24 total that were approved for Staten Island in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NKHLHQNG75BMLNQWZEGNCLSH34\">While some of the street co-namings have already taken place, many official ceremonies are still to come in 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DTVTQTY53NCHJOKYTGKK2BFU2E\">There were 16 co-namings approved in July for the borough and another group of eight were designated in legislation passed by the City Council in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LTUKG47IQBDC5DTNAJAUQMNAMU\">The honor is one of the most significant ways the city acknowledges the outstanding lives and impact of residents, after their deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4MLILSEIBJHFBNBFLR2FSPEWEM\">In order for a Staten Islander to have a street co-named in their honor, a person must have passed away and made significant contributions to their community during their lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HAOWIXDLMBH4ZFCGPIFVRGZEHA\">The location, which must possess either historical or personal significance to the chosen name, must first be approved by the local community board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VHVTKNKIFZB7DPU2IOG2YODZGQ\">In addition to individual Staten Islanders, one century-old organization, one Albanian historical figure and the two namesakes of the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum are among those that will adorn new street signs:<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dr. Lou Gianvito\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PWVMZURLKJCKJJG6MQQXA5KY3I.jpg\"  \/>Dr. Gianvito, who is beginning his 51st year as a physician,  at his West Brighton practice July 7, 2005.Staten Island Advance<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QMEDG754FJGSDA3F5K4LXZ4VXM\">Dr. Louis G. Gianvito, M.D. Way at the intersection of Conyingham Avenue and Castleton Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UJA4UGXF6NH3TDYVEZWLYEREXA\">\u200bA beloved family physician, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2024\/01\/staten-islands-doctor-a-family-physician-who-treated-4-generations-dies-at-96.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2024\/01\/staten-islands-doctor-a-family-physician-who-treated-4-generations-dies-at-96.html\">Dr. Louis Gilbert Gianvito served four generations of fellow Staten Islanders and worked tirelessly as a public servant<\/a>. He died in January 2024 at age 96.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6SKLR7E275FD5F2CQKJYHRO4EY\">Retired FDNY Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kerry Kelly is both a niece and a former student of Dr. G\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HQ5FTGOK6RHZXBZISY4BC335GY\">\u201cHe always made you feel confident that he could fix things and take care of things,\u201d she said. \u201cHe remained calm and could get to the heart of the problem. He\u2019s one of the brightest people I\u2019ve ever met. Almost every physician on Staten Island has truly been affected by him because he had a broad interaction with everybody, and he continues to influence physicians throughout their careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ROYVXE3LQNA3JFWHRLTJB5RUTI\">Scott \u201cThe Plateman\u201d Spina Way at the intersection of 8th Street and New Dorp Lane<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SF4YNAFHBZFVHC4QZBZ3VRXODE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/obits.silive.com\/us\/obituaries\/siadvance\/name\/scott-spina-obituary?id=56877045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/obits.silive.com\/us\/obituaries\/siadvance\/name\/scott-spina-obituary?id=56877045\">According to a family obituary<\/a>, Scott Spina was a Vietnam War veteran. Upon returning from Vietnam, he and his father Dominick co-founded \u201cD&amp;S Private Service Bureau\u201d which is now known as \u201cThe Plateman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3QY2YWB5ENFPRLD6ZUNTIVOB5I\">\u201cScott was a charter member of the Central Kiwanis Club, a Distinguished Past Lieutenant Governor, Past President, Past Secretary and served as President of the NCK Foundation Board. He served his community with dedication and generosity for over 34 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FKCQV5HD2VBVZEZLZXC7Y66VVQ\">He died in 2024 at age 76.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SUFMVA5M2BCLVBYXVHP5AYV6UM\">Coach Bill Welsh Way at the intersection of Allison Avenue and Colgate Place<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B4PSXHUDUZB4DBHREFN3SSVEEE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/sports\/2023\/09\/he-was-a-bigger-than-life-person-staten-island-road-racing-legend-bill-welsh-dies-at-94.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/sports\/2023\/09\/he-was-a-bigger-than-life-person-staten-island-road-racing-legend-bill-welsh-dies-at-94.html\">Legendary Island track and field figure Bill Welsh<\/a> &#8212; athlete, coach, hero and inspiration to many \u2014 died in September 2023. He was 94 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H6UHWDJB4ZALJEOQVEO63LRWVU\">Arguably the most influential figure in the history of Island track and field, cross country, and road racing, Welsh left behind an unparalleled legacy of excellence, sprinkled with a touch of friendly competitiveness, dynamic enthusiasm, generosity, optimism and humor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RWGJAIT5HVGDRFS57P4FKRLFHA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/recsports\/2025\/03\/this-is-where-he-built-his-legacy-street-renamed-for-bill-welsh-is-fitting-tribute-for-late-staten-island-road-racing-legend.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/recsports\/2025\/03\/this-is-where-he-built-his-legacy-street-renamed-for-bill-welsh-is-fitting-tribute-for-late-staten-island-road-racing-legend.html\">The street was renamed in March. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AZTMFJE25RD3RPGVGGZIFHPZIM\">Arthur C. Leahy Jr. Way At the intersection of Forest Hill Road and Richmond Hill Road<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K4SWWMOYEJHSXFU3BQDDW6G3AY\">Honoring a NYC Parks Worker who was murdered 50 years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/gracelyn\/2025\/04\/street-co-naming-honors-nyc-parks-worker-murdered-50-years-ago-on-staten-island.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/gracelyn\/2025\/04\/street-co-naming-honors-nyc-parks-worker-murdered-50-years-ago-on-staten-island.html\">this street renaming ceremony was held in April 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JONCFT7XD5AL7LXWCCCWJ6FPIQ\">Leahy was 35 when he was shot and killed during a botched burglary on the night of April 6, 1975, as he was working an overnight security shift at LaTourette Golf Course. He was ambushed by a trio of robbers who sought to break into a golf course safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BA23MD7HYRHWNOVA6FMDX4TYZI\">A Mariners Harbor resident, Leahy grew up in West Brighton, attending Port Richmond High School before joining the U.S. Marine Corps and eventually taking a job with the city Parks Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3V23NG52UNB6BEOPDIFRSGPBHU\">He left behind a wife, Jeannette Leahy, a stay-at-home mom, and their five young children, ages 3-12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P7JBEIU2RREE7FTZ75UQMZQGFE\">Isa Boletini Way at the intersection of Oceanside Avenue and Buel Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VON7D4JFOFHS7OZ6SU2QTFGKDM\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/12\/staten-island-street-named-after-albanian-hero-isa-boletini.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2025\/12\/staten-island-street-named-after-albanian-hero-isa-boletini.html\">Hundreds of Albanian Americans and local officials gathered on Nov. 30<\/a> to dedicate \u201cIsa Boletini Way\u201d at the intersection of Father Capodanno Boulevard and Seaview Avenue. (Staten Island Advance)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TIDEBYXX65GUJPTMCILOGRGODI\">Bobby McGhie Way at the intersection of Bement Avenue and Richmond Terrace<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UKQWWVFADVFA5KMPU674XKEWGI\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/highschoolsports\/2023\/04\/bobby-mcghie-a-staten-island-hs-football-aficionado-who-wore-many-hats-professionally-has-died.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/highschoolsports\/2023\/04\/bobby-mcghie-a-staten-island-hs-football-aficionado-who-wore-many-hats-professionally-has-died.html\">Bobby McGhie, a staple in Staten Island\u2019s high school football community for years<\/a> and former NYC Board of Education and Parks and Recreation employee, died in April 2023. The Curtis High School alum was 71.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2QQMDFMJ7NFHVBNJ3ZGBZOYTO4\">\u201cHe did an awful lot because he never said \u2018no,\u2019\u201d said a friend and colleague. \u201cHe had two jobs for most of his career and on top of that, he often volunteered as a coach, trainer or on a committee selecting award winners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LBKX2PJIANEUVK6SIMSZV5F5I4\">\u201cHe always wanted to give back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MBVSYOBQQJCNDI6NEHNTJSTWF4\">Tom Magliocca Way at the intersection of Jersey Street and Crescent Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B3WP7SP3KJADLFNEAX2V5U3ZVE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/matthewfuneralhome.com\/tribute\/details\/2885\/Thomas-Anthony-Magliocca\/obituary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/matthewfuneralhome.com\/tribute\/details\/2885\/Thomas-Anthony-Magliocca\/obituary.html\">According to a family obituary<\/a>, Tom Magliocca \u201cwas drafted into service for his country in 1966 and proudly served as a Sergeant in the First Division (the Big Red One), First Squadron, Fourth U.S. Cavalry. He served in Vietnam from April, 1967-April, 1968. Tommy is a Vietnam Veteran and member of the Thomas J. Tori Chapter 421 and is also a member of the Combat Infantry Assoc. He also worked as a Sanitation Engineer for the City of New York, a private Security Guard, Florida Court Deputy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DIUKEP4CKFGX5BEFE6SJHDJCG4\">Rep. John Murphy Way At the intersection of Kissel Avenue and Henderson Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HUL6MOTVEJFDRFZP2BCUXQ36XU\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/obituaries\/2015\/05\/former_staten_island_congressm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/obituaries\/2015\/05\/former_staten_island_congressm.html\">Family and friends recalled former Staten Island Congressman John M. She helped found the Port Richmond Improvement Association and was an active member of the Port Richmond Civic Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YGLBJTHPXZGVBNZEEPC2VRZ4FE\">Giuseppe Garibaldi Way At the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Tompkins Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BZGOJP2DCJEZDHJ3QLIJNSGRMM\">One of the namesakes of the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giuseppe_Garibaldi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giuseppe_Garibaldi\">Giuseppe Garibaldi was an Italian general, revolutionary and republican<\/a>. He contributed to the Unification of Italy and the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. He is considered to be one of Italy\u2019s \u201cfathers of the fatherland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OPE64DP22RHMVKZQZYWB5TPO3Y\">In 1850, the inventor Antonio Meucci employed Garibaldi in his candle factory on Staten Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4ZQ3BKSXWBA5TEQYOEUHIF6BMY\">Antonio Meucci Way At the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Tompkins Avenue<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4EHVX2COFNFMNGDFAINVO5LHAA\">One of the namesakes of the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antonio_Meucci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antonio_Meucci\">Antonio Meucci was an Italian inventor who settled on Staten Island<\/a>. He set up a form of voice-communication link in his Staten Island home that connected the second-floor bedroom to his laboratory\u2014the first telephonic device, which he patented in 1871, five years before Alexander Graham-Bell\u2019s famous invention of the telephone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3L6JL5GD2ZCJNLOCIHXZB7BPKM\">Egon J. Salmon Way at the intersection of South Greanleaf Avenue and Victory Boulevard<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V6HM4U5OBRHKBHXM7PFRD6VLTQ\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/09\/egon-j-salmon-dies-a-holocaust-survivor-who-shared-the-horror-he-endured-with-thousands-he-was-98.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2022\/09\/egon-j-salmon-dies-a-holocaust-survivor-who-shared-the-horror-he-endured-with-thousands-he-was-98.html\">Egon J. Salmon<\/a>, who fled Nazi Germany with his family as a young boy, educated thousands on the lessons of the Holocaust by openly sharing his story, and established himself as a Staten Island community leader as founder of the borough\u2019s oldest independent real estate firm, died in September 2022. He was 98.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q3A5GD2RZNEIPGYXRW2MKL3WCA\">Victor Scalici Way at the intersection of Port Richmond Avenue and Hooker Place<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5NUQRTVPYRAI5K662UHRTQHEZ4\">The longtime owner of a florist shop, expert grower and a builder of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Victor Scalici was remembered as someone who built the neighborhood of Port Richmond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ND7PUR54KFA6VOPOBO2HTMO2VQ\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/10\/nyc-honor-bestowed-on-late-business-owner-who-built-this-neighborhood-on-staten-island.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/10\/nyc-honor-bestowed-on-late-business-owner-who-built-this-neighborhood-on-staten-island.html\">The street renaming was held in his honor in October.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DIZQBUHVRFAIVEZQEH3UVSDAEI\">Deacon John A. Singler, II Street at the intersection of Fisher Avenue and Amboy Road<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KU5IRRQCNVGWDCLFA6NJKIHG6Y\">An educator and a man of faith who dedicated his life to the welfare of his students, and served in many capacities at his parish. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FY7MNPHFANBRLCYNJEZ75PG4U4\">Throughout his career, his intelligence, wit and ability to connect with young adults contributed to turning around the lives of hundreds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"25K2OMQPAVAUVFUYCZLLN63DHA\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/12\/street-co-naming-in-tottenville-dedicated-to-a-lifelong-educator-who-changed-the-lives-of-young-adults.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/entertainment\/2025\/12\/street-co-naming-in-tottenville-dedicated-to-a-lifelong-educator-who-changed-the-lives-of-young-adults.html\">The ceremonial street renaming occurred in December 2025.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3HE72RBZFRBVXKVPPJVQNZULOI\">\u201cDeacon Singler was a pillar of the Tottenville community. He not only led and assisted people spiritually, but when times of crisis, such as Hurricane Sandy occurred, he helped organize supplies and clothing for those in need,\u201d said Councilmember Frank Morano. \u201cI am honored to have passed this co-naming as one of my first acts after being sworn in earlier this year. He joined the FDNY in 1999 and was eventually assigned to Ladder 87 in Annadale.
