NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani ripped the Trump administration Saturday over the U.S military\u2019s capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife, <\/a>condemning the act as an overly aggressive \u201cact of war.\u201d<\/p>\n

The socialist pol said he called President Trump personally to let him know he vehemently opposed the arrest of the notorious dictator and his wife Cilia Flores \u2013 who\u2019ve been fugitives since 2020 \u2014 on narcoterrorism charges.<\/p>\n

\u201cI called the president and spoke with him directly to register my opposition to this act, and to make clear that it was an opposition based on being opposed to a pursuit of regime change, to the violation of federal international law, and a desire to see that be consistent each and every day,\u201d Mamdani told reporters during an unrelated Brooklyn news conference<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump plans to have the U.S. temporarily \u201crun\u201d Venezuela until there\u2019s \u201cproper\u201d transition into new leadership. REUTERS<\/p>\n

\u201cI registered my opposition. I made it clear, and we left it at that,\u201d added Mamdani, referring to his first confrontation with Trump since being sworn in as mayor on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Mamdani slammed the raid hours earlier on X <\/a>after being briefed by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and other city honchos on the planned NYC imprisonment of Maduro and Flores.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis blatant pursuit of regime change doesn\u2019t just affect those abroad, it directly impacts New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who call this city home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about drugs. If it was, Trump wouldn\u2019t have pardoned one of the largest narco traffickers in the world last month,\u201d the Queens native wrote on X, \u201cIt\u2019s about oil and regime change.<\/p>\n

House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a joint statement saying Trump\u2019s plan to have the U.S. temporarily \u201crun\u201d Venezuela until there\u2019s \u201cproper\u201d transition into new leadership is \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n
