{"id":89172,"date":"2026-01-05T01:07:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T01:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/89172\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T01:07:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T01:07:06","slug":"nyc-subways-jump-to-crazy-3-per-ride-and-straphangers-arent-happy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/89172\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC subways jump to &#8216;crazy&#8217; $3 per ride &#8212; and straphangers aren&#8217;t happy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s just not fare!<\/p>\n<p>The MTA\u2019s latest rate hike went into effect Sunday \u2014 and exasperated penny-pinching straphangers forced to fork over even the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/30\/us-news\/mta-slams-commuters-with-fare-hike-months-after-imposing-congestion-pricing-you-guys-are-pathetic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 more cents per ride<\/a> were shaking their heads at the extra expense.<\/p>\n<p>Subway rides will now cost $3 per swipe \u2014 up from the $2.90 established in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Subway and bus fares were raised to $3 Sunday, a 10-cent increase from the $2.90 fare established in 2023. Billy Tompkins\/Zuma \/ SplashNews.com<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just know it\u2019s gonna add up,\u201d said Mayan Crampton, 23, who regularly commutes into Manhattan from his New Jersey home in Hoboken.<\/p>\n<p>Phaedra Phaded, 33, who regularly commutes from Chinatown in Manhattan, said, \u201cIt\u2019s f\u2013ked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t get paid enough for this. The hike is crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Spectra, 71, says he has seen numerous fare hikes in his day, and each one felt as bad as the last. James Keivom<\/p>\n<p>Her friend, 41-year-old Seana Steele, thought the MTA could focus on making better use of the funds it is already generating instead of asking New Yorkers to fork over even a dime more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MTA constantly misappropriates funds. Instead of installing new turnstile, they could actually improve the service,\u201d Steele said, referring to the transit system\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/29\/us-news\/mtas-new-subway-gates-blasted-as-easy-to-beat-as-man-with-cane-among-fare-jumpers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seemingly endless attempts to deter<\/a> fare jumpers who cost the MTA more than $400 million in lost fares last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re so concerned about people jumping the turnstile. If [rides] were more affordable and available to everyone, that wouldn\u2019t be an issue,\u201d Steele said, adding that in the past she\u2019s been in positions where the fare increase \u201ccertainly could have affected me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayan Crampton, 23, thinks the extra fare will add up over time but sees no choice but to pay it to get to work.  James Keivom<\/p>\n<p>The most recent increase comes as the future of the MTA remains unclear, with new Mayor Zohran Mamdani having vowed to follow through on his campaign promise of making the city\u2019s bus system completely free.<\/p>\n<p>His plan would cost the system about $700 million, which <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/21\/us-news\/kathy-hochul-talking-with-zohran-mamdanis-team-about-free-nyc-buses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mamdani said he would pay<\/a> by raising taxes on corporations and high-earning individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Some hopeful New York lawmakers also think straphangers need relief from commuter prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be clear, we need to freeze fares \u2014 not raise them,\u201d said New York state Comptroller candidate Adem Bunkeddeko. \u201cThe cost of everything is going up, and what working people don\u2019t need right now is to pay more just to get around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s fare increase is the MTA\u2019s second in just over 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Before the 2023 hike to $2.90, the fare was raised to $2.75 \u2014 up from $2.50 \u2014 in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt always feels bad,\u201d \u201d\u00a0said 71-year-old David Spectra, who recalled numerous fare hikes in his day. \u201cIt felt bad when it went from 15 cents to 20 cents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just another New York City thing.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s just not fare!
