Since his inauguration, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has made clear he intends to act quickly when it comes to the city\u2019s housing crisis.<\/p>\n
One of his first initiatives is a plan to hold landlords accountable through what he is calling \u201crental ripoff hearings.\u201d<\/p>\n
For many tenants across the city, unsafe living conditions are a daily reality. Mold, collapsed ceilings and a lack of heat during colder months are common complaints, particularly among renters dealing with negligent landlords.<\/p>\n
Mamdani acknowledged those struggles during a news conference Tuesday, announcing the launch of the hearings, which will allow tenants to testify publicly about their experiences.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are hearings that will give New Yorkers an opportunity to testify in person as to the struggles that they have had to deal with, oftentimes in isolation,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n
The goal of the hearings is to crack down on landlord neglect and abandonment. Mamdani said the hearings will be held in all five boroughs within his first 100 days in office.<\/p>\n
\u201cTenants are not only able to testify as to the ways in which they are being ripped off, but this will also be used as an opportunity to craft policy recommendations that we will then implement and deliver,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Leading the initiative is the city\u2019s newly appointed Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Dina Levy. Mamdani said Levy\u2019s decades of experience organizing and advocating for tenants made her the clear choice for the role.<\/p>\n
He cited her work at the Birthplace of Hip-Hop building in The Bronx, where residents successfully purchased their building from a negligent landlord after years of organizing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were engaged in an epic, yearslong battle to stop a predatory landlord from acquiring and demolishing our homes,\u201d Levy said. \u201cI\u2019m happy to say we won that battle.\u201d<\/p>\n
Levy said she plans to continue fighting for fair housing starting on her first day as commissioner.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will need to increase the resources to build more affordable housing,\u201d she said. \u201cWe will need to try new, innovative and sometimes scary innovations in order to overcome this crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n
