Deposed Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife are set to make their first court appearance on Monday, days after they were captured by the U.S. at their home in an overnight military operation<\/a> and flown to New York to face narco-terrorism charges brought by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were transported by helicopter from Brooklyn\u2019s Metropolitan Detention Center, where they\u2019ve been detained, to a federal courthouse in lower Manhattan, where they are expected to appear before a judge at around noon ET.<\/p>\n

According to the 25-page indictment<\/a>, Maduro, his wife and others are accused of using his \u201cillegally obtained authority\u201d to facilitate the shipment of thousands of tons of cocaine into the United States. They could face life in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n

President Trump defended the American military intervention in Venezuela as a national security issue, given its vast oil reserves, saying that the U.S. would temporarily \u201crun the country<\/a>\u201d until it is \u201crun properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The move sent shockwaves across the western hemisphere, especially in Greenland, after Trump expressed renewed interest in the semi-autonomous Danish territory. “We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security,\u201d Trump told reporters. \u201cAnd Denmark is not going to be able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated a warning to Cuba on NBC\u2019s Meet the Press, saying, \u201cThey\u2019re in a lot of trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n
