STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Less than a week into the new year, local Democrats are already gearing up for what\u2019s expected to be a contentious 2026 election cycle.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the Richmond County Democratic Party announced the endorsement of five candidates for state office, including two incumbent elected officials and three challengers to seats currently held by Republicans.<\/p>\n

Assemblymember Charles Fall, who serves as both deputy majority leader of the New York State Assembly and chair of the local Democratic Party, was among those to receive an endorsement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was truly inspiring to see so many come together to support our candidates for the upcoming election,\u201d said Fall. \u201cAs we begin this next election cycle, I am filled with optimism and excitement about the candidates we\u2019ve endorsed. They understand the challenges Staten Islanders face every day and are committed to fighting for safer communities, affordable living, and a better quality of life for our borough.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"CharlesState Assemblymember Charles D. Fall was among various candidates to be endorsed by the Richmond County Democratic Party in the upcoming 2026 elections.STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE<\/p>\n

State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, a Democrat who represents the North Shore and South Brooklyn, was endorsed for reelection in State Senate – District 23, which she has represented since 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m running for re-election to build safer, more affordable communities and to continue delivering results for Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn\u201d, said Scarcella-Spanton. <\/p>\n

She went on to highlight her various legislative achievements since taking office, many of which have centered around law enforcement, first responders and military veterans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m proud to have secured critical measures that improve public safety and protect quality of life, including health screenings for our brave firefighters and fire officers. I\u2019ve fought to restore fairness for our law enforcement by advancing legislation to reinstate the 20-year retirement plan, helping the NYPD retain experienced officers and remain competitive statewide. I also passed legislation to cut through red tape so 9\/11 first responders can access the benefits they earned without unnecessary obstacles,\u201d the senator said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd as the wife of a U.S. Army combat veteran and Chair of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs Committee, I\u2019m proud to have passed meaningful veterans\u2019 legislation\u2014expanding maternity care, education access, and employment support for those who have served,” she continued.<\/p>\n

\"LocalState Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton was among various candidates to be endorsed by the Richmond County Democratic Party in the upcoming 2026 elections.<\/p>\n

Matthew Mobilia<\/a>, a West Brighton attorney, received an endorsement in the race for the 63rd State Assembly District seat currently held by Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo.<\/p>\n

Mobilia previously ran against Pirozzolo for the same Mid-Island seat in 2024, but fell short with just 42% of the vote.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201dAs a husband, father, and small business owner in our community, I\u2019m passionate about addressing the issues that matter most to the families of our district. This campaign is about making life safer, more affordable, and making sure our hard-earned dollars are put back into the pockets of the people of this district. This type of work begins with electing effective leaders who can make these things happen,” Mobilia said.<\/p>\n

Tim Qorraj, a business owner and real estate agent, was endorsed for the 64th State Assembly District seat, which represents parts of the East Shore and Brooklyn and is currently held by Assemblymember Michael Tannousis.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy campaign will be grounded in fighting for residents in Staten Island and Brooklyn to ensure they have a voice in Albany. The 64th Assembly District deserves a present leader who will be effective in fighting for affordable living and a safe and secure community. I look forward to being that advocate for my community and delivering,\u201d said Qorraj.<\/p>\n

Alexis M. Rodriguez received an endorsement in the race for State Senate – District 24, which has been held by incumbent Republican Andrew Lanza since 2007.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am deeply honored to receive the Democratic Party\u2019s endorsement as I begin my campaign for New York State Senate District 24. I believe that fresh ideas and real solutions are essential to ensure our community is truly represented in Albany. I am excited to tackle issues like traffic congestion, public safety, and improved education. Together, we will fight for a brighter future, ensuring that every Staten Islander\u2019s voice is heard and valued in our state government,\u201d said Rodriguez.<\/p>\n

The Richmond County Democratic Party did not announce candidate endorsements for two of the upcoming local races: the 62nd State Assembly District, which is currently represented by Assemblymember Michael Reilly, and New York\u2019s 11th Congressional District, which is currently represented by Rep.
