{"id":91400,"date":"2026-01-06T19:27:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T19:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/91400\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T19:27:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T19:27:06","slug":"nurses-union-close-to-deal-with-staten-island-hospital-potential-strike-averted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/91400\/","title":{"rendered":"Nurses union close to deal with Staten Island hospital; Potential strike averted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AGXY7S2IMNFRRB3K3BGDP7M2AU\">STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 Negotiations took a positive turn at Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) Tuesday as nurses rescinded their strike threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FSAPQC3VRBD2JPQSNI4ZOTVU24\">Unionized nurses with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/01\/nurses-give-strike-notice-at-this-staten-island-hospital.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/01\/nurses-give-strike-notice-at-this-staten-island-hospital.html\">New York State Nurses Association lifted their 10-day strike notice from Friday<\/a> after management at the West Brighton hospital made some concessions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JZ4UIYRH35DN7LZQEJQHMJLC5U\">According to the union, nurses reached tentative agreements with management at RUMC and five other hospitals on a variety of issues, including healthcare and pension protections, improved hospital safety and limits on the use of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V6LWKFS4E5C5PLVQZNLZ2TJE7I\">Alexander Lutz, a RUMC spokesperson, said the hospital was pleased with the nurses\u2019 decision to lift the strike threat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VOGDPWYGNZDUPOG4T2IR5KI3IY\">\u201cThis decision allows us to maintain uninterrupted care for our patients and the communities we serve. We value our nurses and respect the important role they play every day in caring for our patients and their families,\u201d he said. \u201cWhile contract negotiations are still ongoing, we remain committed to continuing discussions in good faith and working collaboratively toward a fair and sustainable agreement. Our priority remains ensuring safe, high-quality patient care for our entire community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5SQ2NBHNVVF6BGKY763XQ27FKE\">NYSNA wrote in a press release that their bargaining teams will continue negotiations through the week and hope to have new contracts settled by Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BDXH3JW4UJHMNPZTX5U3JK5K4M\">Though negotiations have taken positive steps at RUMC and the five other hospitals, contract negotiations remain outstanding at several other hospitals around the city where nurses are threatening strikes if deals aren\u2019t reached by Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H2UGGPGSGVATJFRDQUNUTRYIPY\">NYSNA President Nancy Hagans, a Staten Islander and nurse at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, contrasted the two hospital groups, those who offered concessions and those who have not, for their disparate wealth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LBP32T343ZF4RMLQMHVBI5PSBQ\">\u201cThe safety-net hospitals that care for New York City\u2019s most vulnerable patients are doing the right thing by guaranteeing healthcare benefits for nurses and agreeing to stronger safe staffing standards and protections from workplace violence,\u201d she said. \u201cNew York City\u2019s wealthiest hospitals should follow their lead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C3TFJ4QCBVBVBNO6DPCBTSHR44\">Colloquially, \u201csafety-net hospitals\u201d are those that serve some of the poorest New Yorkers.
