{"id":91449,"date":"2026-01-06T20:03:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T20:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/91449\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T20:03:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T20:03:07","slug":"nearly-17000-nurses-at-nyc-hospitals-prepare-to-walk-out-over-staffing-healthcare-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/91449\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 17,000 nurses at NYC hospitals prepare to walk out over staffing, healthcare cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nurses from five private hospitals in Brooklyn and Staten Island who were set to strike later this month have rescinded their Jan. 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/new-york\/nurses-strike-warning-nyc-01022025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">strike notice<\/a> as they neared tentative agreements with management, according to the union representing them.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes as a Jan. 12 strike deadline approaches, and nurses at seven other NYC hospitals remain poised to walk out unless management meets their demands.<\/p>\n<p>Over 16,700 nurses at seven private NYC hospitals could still strike next week after negotiations with hospital leadership over healthcare and workplace violence protections, wages and staffing remain at an impasse. Affected hospitals include Montefiore Medical Center, Mount Sinai Hospitals, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia University Medical Center, Brooklyn Hospital Center, BronxCare Health System and Flushing Hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But on Jan. 6, the nurses at five medical centers, who are all members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysna.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York State Nurses Association<\/a>, reached tentative agreements with their employers: One Brooklyn Health\u2019s Interfaith Medical Center, One Brooklyn Health\u2019s Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center,\u00a0Maimonides\u00a0Medical Center, Wyckoff Heights Medical\u00a0Center\u00a0and\u00a0Richmond University Medical Center. <\/p>\n<p>The union said the nurses at these \u201csafety net hospitals\u201d would continue bargaining this week with the \u201cmutual goal of settling their contracts\u201d by Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur safety-net hospitals are taking significant steps toward settling fiscally responsible contracts that protect nurses and patients, while rich private hospitals like Montefiore, Mount Sinai, and NewYork-Presbyterian continue to throw away hundreds of millions of dollars to fight against frontline nurses,\u201d NYSNA president and Maimonides nurse Nancy Hagans, RN, said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137610272\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC01064.jpeg\" alt=\"Nurses strike in Manhattan\" width=\"700\" height=\"468\" title=\"Nurses strike threat: Deals near with five 'safety net hospitals,' but 17,000 caregivers still posed to walk off job next week 2\"  \/>Nurses chant outside Mount Sinai Hospital during the first day of the NYSNA strike on Jan. 9, 2023.Photo by Dean Moses<\/p>\n<p>She applauded the safety net hospitals for negotiating with the nurses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety-net hospitals that care for New York City\u2019s most vulnerable patients are doing the right thing by guaranteeing healthcare benefits for nurses and agreeing to stronger safe staffing standards and protections from workplace violence,\u201d she said. \u201cNew York City\u2019s wealthiest hospitals should follow their lead.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Management responds<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Mount Sinai told amNewYork in a statement that management is preparing for a strike. It is something they are already familiar with, as nurses at the medical center went on strike for three days before winning a historic contract in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we are continuing to work to reach a deal to provide nurses with exceptional wages and benefits, we are taking steps to prepare for a strike, and have already begun bringing together clinical leaders to run staffing disruption drills, integrating outside nurses into our daily operations, and are coordinating with other systems to manage capacity to ensure our campuses are prepared to maintain high-quality patient care in the event of a staffing disruption,\u201d the spokesperson explained.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital leadership said that the preparations are expensive, and that they \u201ctake away resources that could be invested in nurses or other members of our care teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mount Sinai reported that NYSNA demands would require the health system to spend $3.59 billion over three years, nearly triple its current costs of $1.281 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNYSNA has stated that \u2018our healthcare system is under attack\u2019 and \u2018healthcare cuts will mean\u2026less hospital funding,\u2019 which will cost hospitals in New York $8 billion and 35,000 jobs, yet NYSNA is demanding hospitals increase the average nurse salary by $110,000 to $272,000 per year for 10 days of work per month,\u201d the hospital spokesperson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>amNewYork contacted other hospitals with pending strikes for comment on safety preparations and negotiations, and is awaiting responses.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Brendan Griffith, president of the NYC Central Labor Council for the AFL-CIO, said last month that the city\u2019s labor movement stands with the nurses\u2019 after they voted to authorize a strike on Dec. 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen hospitals drag out negotiations, fail to address workplace safety, or refuse to invest in staffing, it\u2019s working people and their families who pay the price,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nurses from five private hospitals in Brooklyn and Staten Island who were set to strike later this month&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":78555,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[4429,7771,23185,9,43285,56,63,65,64,23188],"class_list":{"0":"post-91449","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york-city","8":"tag-healthcare","9":"tag-montefiore","10":"tag-mount-sinai","11":"tag-new-york","12":"tag-nursing-strike-in-nyc","13":"tag-ny","14":"tag-nyc","15":"tag-nyc-headlines","16":"tag-nyc-news","17":"tag-nysna-nurses"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/91449","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=91449"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/91449\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/78555"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=91449"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=91449"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=91449"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
