Mayor Zohran Mamdani stood by his new top tenant advocate Tuesday after\u00a0her past inflammatory social media posts<\/a>\u00a0sparked a firestorm \u2014 and a warning shot from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Longtime housing activist Cea Weaver, the new director of the Office to Protect Tenants, received a boost from Mamdani even as controversy engulfed his administration over her recently unearthed posts branding homeownership \u201ca weapon of white supremacy\u201d and declaring, \u201cSeize private property.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weaver called homeownership a \u201cweapon of white supremacy\u201d on X. Instagram \/ Zohran Mamdani<\/p>\n

\u201cWe made the decision to have Cea Weaver serve as our executive director for the mayor\u2019s office to protect tenants, to build on the work that she has done to protect tenants across the city, and we were already seeing the results of that work,\u201d Mamdani told reporters following an unrelated news conference.<\/p>\n

It came as Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights at the Department of Justice, said on One America News Network that the feds were ready to \u201cswoop in\u201d to protect Big Apple residents<\/a> in response to Weaver\u2019s shocking views.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey should be on notice, they\u2019re on high scrutiny,\u201d Dhillon of city government.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will NOT tolerate discrimination based on skin color,\u201d she also said in a Tuesday social media post. \u201cIt is ILLEGAL. [DOJ Civil Rights is paying very close attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani claimed the city is already seeing results from Weaver\u2019s work to protect tenants. Paul Martinka<\/p>\n

Dhillon also said in an X post Monday that federal housing laws trump \u201cany collective Marxist fantasies\u201d while commenting on a March 2021 video of Weaver making more eyebrow-raising remarks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the clip, she said property should be transitioned toward a model of \u201cshared equity\u201d that would mean \u201cfamilies, especially white families, but some POC families who are homeowners as well, are gonna have a different relationship to property than the one that we currently have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weaver has long advocated for her radical stance on private property.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrivate property including any kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of white supremacy,\u201d\u00a0she spouted in 2019.<\/p>\n

In a 2021 op-ed, she argued the state can \u201cfurther de-commodify housing and land\u201d by cancelling rents and shuttering eviction courts.<\/p>\n
