The mother of Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s new woke renters\u2019 rights honcho \u2014\u00a0who\u2019s dubbed homeownership \u201ca weapon of white supremacy\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 is a professor at a prestigious college and owns\u00a0a beautiful Nashville home worth\u00a0$1.6 million.<\/p>\n

Celia Applegate \u2014 whose daughter, Cea Weaver is the director of Mamdani\u2019s Office to Protect Tenants \u2014 teaches German studies at Vanderbilt University and owns a pricey classic Craftsman home just south of the main strip in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Applegate bought the property with her partner, David Blackbourn, in July 2012 for $814,000 and real estate websites now list the pad\u2019s value at more than $1.6 million, records show.<\/p>\n

The revelation comes after Weaver\u2019s past slew of inflammatory\u00a0social media posts came to light<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 including comments raging against what Mamdani\u2019s Democratic Socialists of America ally dubbed a racist homeownership system in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrivate property including any kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of white supremacy,\u201d Weaver, 37, spouted in 2019.<\/p>\n

The longtime tenants\u2019 rights advocate also repeatedly railed against landlords, saying in 2024 that the city should \u201cseize private property\u201d if buildings are allowed to fall into disrepair and officials deem it necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no such thing as a \u2018good\u2019 gentrifier, only people who are actively working on projects to dismantle white supremacy and capitalism and people who aren\u2019t,\u201d Weaver also posted in July 2018, according to an archived post.<\/p>\n

Despite railing against gentrification, Nashville \u2014 where her mother\u2019s home is located \u2014 has experienced some of the most \u201cintense\u201d gentrification of any US city in recent years, according\u00a0to a National Community Reinvestment Coalition study<\/a>\u00a0in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nashville ranked as the most gentrified city in the country during the 2010\u2019s, beating other major areas with histories of displacement, the study said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mamdani has stood by his controversial pick, telling reporters Tuesday, \u201cWe made the decision to have Cea Weaver serve as our executive director for the mayor\u2019s office to protect tenants.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weaver quickly hung up the phone Tuesday when a Post reporter identified themself, only saying, \u201cI cannot talk right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weaver\u2019s past work history includes working for the progressive Housing Justice For All, which is a group of more than 80 groups filled with tenants and homeless New Yorkers that call housing a human right.<\/p>\n
