If general manager Darren Mougey has anything to say about it … maybe?

Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn addressed several topics Tuesday morning regarding the future of the 3-14 Jets. From a future change at defensive coordinator to picking up the pieces of a failed year, both the top men in New York’s brass understand they need to improve greatly in year two.

One of the top questions to answer, though, is Hall’s future. The former second-round pick ran for 1,000 yards for the first time in his NFL career in 2025. He also struggled mightily through the midway point in the season, like many of the team’s offensive starters.

Is 1,000 yards enough for a long-term extension? It’s the big issue that Mougey will have to determine.

Jets’ offseason outlook

There are two potential solutions for the Jets regarding Hall. They could allow him to walk in free agency and earn a compensatory pick for 2027, or come to an agreement on a short or long-term deal.

A short-term deal could look like the franchise or transition tag. That would pay him out to around $14 million. A long-term extension, meanwhile, could pay him at least over $10 million per year.

Whether the team was on board for either option remained to be seen. Mougey was as tight-lipped as ever – but did show just how much Hall meant to the future of the offense next season.

“Breece is a good player. I want as many good players back as we can,” Mougey said. “I met with Breece yesterday and had a lot of good conversations. So, we’ll go through this process, and we’ll see how free agency unfolds, but we want to add good players.”

Mougey’s answer shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. As a general manager, he shouldn’t be giving any legitimate answers ahead of free agency, especially for one of the better players on the roster.

For as good as Hall is, the Jets may know an honest truth: He isn’t one of the elite players at his position.

They need to determine whether the franchise tag money or long-term control is worth the kind of money expected to be allocated. That decision won’t come in a press room in January.

It’ll come ahead of free agency. And then Mougey will be able to determine just how valuable the running back truly is.

Reporting from the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, NJ.

Is Breece Hall’s time with the New York Jets coming to a close?
