{"id":92058,"date":"2026-01-07T07:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T07:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/92058\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T07:20:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T07:20:08","slug":"exclusive-how-best-medicine-transformed-quaint-new-york-towns-into-maine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/92058\/","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive | How &#8216;Best Medicine&#8217; transformed quaint New York towns into Maine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fresh Maine lobster, straight from New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the new Fox comedy \u201cBest Medicine,\u201d which showrunner Liz\u00a0Tuccillo described as \u201cHouse\u201d meets \u201cGilmore Girls,\u201d the curmudgeonly Dr. Martin Best (Josh Charles) moves from Boston to be the general practitioner in a quaint Maine fishing village called Port Wenn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBest Medicine\u201d premieres Tuesday, Jan. 6 (8 p.m. on Fox), and the town is filled with quirky characters played by <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/26\/entertainment\/inside-annie-potts-new-josh-charles-comedy-best-medicine-and-the-co-star-that-nearly-bit-her\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Annie Potts<\/a>, Abigail Spencer, and Josh Segarra. It\u2019s all based on the British show, \u201cDoc Martin.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, the cast didn\u2019t have to relocate to remote Maine \u2013 it was all filmed in New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was spending time in Maine with friends during Covid,\u201d Tuccillo told The Post.\u00a0\u201cI wanted to put it in a place that was not just a small, cozy small town, but also had an industry attached to it and a livelihood and a lifestyle. Instead, Tuccillo and the \u201cBest Medicine\u201d team found some quaint <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/16\/real-estate\/hudson-valley-becomes-homeowner-hot-spot-amid-rising-ny-rent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hudson Valley<\/a> towns about ninety minutes outside of Manhattan that could be transformed into Maine onscreen, including New Hamburg, Cornwall, Beacon, and Hudson.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although the locations make the show scenic, they also made for some amusing misadventures for the cast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Segarra told The Post that when they were filming in Cornwall, \u201cthere is a train that goes by probably every eight minutes. So, we will be in the middle of a scene. And here comes that beautiful train!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He described the train as, \u201cone of those long ones. You\u2019re sitting there for about ten minutes,\u201d waiting for it to pass, which interrupted a scene. \u201cWe had one that I felt like it took an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cOther Two\u201d actor joked that since it was such a part of the filming experience, he wanted \u201cto make sure that we put that train in the show!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Josh Segarra in \u201cBest Medecine.\u201d  FOX Image Collection via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Josh Charles in \u201cBest Medecine.\u201d  FOX Image Collection via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Martin\u2019s home \/ office was on a soundstage, but otherwise, the production used buildings such as real homes, or an old barn in Cornwall for on-location shoots. <\/p>\n<p>They used shots of the Hudson River to stand in for the harbor in their Maine town. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is that the town is on a cove. So it\u2019s sort of like this feeling of a bay, an inlet that goes out into the ocean. We were able to use the river because it gave the feeling of the cove,\u201d said Tuccillo, who also used to write on <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/10\/07\/inside-the-mean-girls-culture-that-destroyed-sex-and-the-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSex and the City.\u201d\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p> Didi Conn, John Quilty, and Abigail Spencer in \u201cBest Medicine.\u201d  FOX Image Collection via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Abigail Spencer in \u201cBest Medicine.\u201d  FOX Image Collection via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Just because the show wasn\u2019t in the Big Apple, however, that doesn\u2019t mean it was immune to New York style goings-on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For instance, Spencer told The Post, \u201cI\u2019ve never been hit on so much!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recalled an incident when she was buying wine, and a man in the wine shop \u201cran after\u201d her when she left. He asked what wine she bought before asking, \u201cDo you want to share that?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recalled that there have been \u201cother stories\u201d along those lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018Oh wow, this is bold.\u2019 It was just so funny. I was like, \u2018Wow. I guess this is what people do in small towns. They notice you don\u2019t have a ring on that finger, lady!\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Josh Charles in \u201cBest Medicine.\u201d  FOX Image Collection via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Josh Charles in \u201cBest Medicine.\u201d  FOX Image Collection via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The former \u201cSuits\u201d actress recalled another incident when she was out with Charles and Segarra \u2014 and they walked past a \u201cmurder crime scene\u201d with caution tape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we were kind of making light of it,\u201d she said, because they assumed that murder wouldn\u2019t happen in a quaint small town.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, when they checked the news the following day, \u201cit was a murder.
